I looked at all the ones you're looking at and decided, gratefully, on the SX50...

Originally went with the Nikon being a long time Nikon fan.
But Nikon falls way short in this category... no RAW etc.

See attached.. the reason I got the SX50!

No question--SX50 is the way to go. Too many positive comments on this camera. I love mine and also loved it's previous model, the SX40 which I still use. Many pros are now using the SX50. I find myself leaving the digital SLRs and all the lenses at home and just grab the SX's.

You didn't even mention Sony, Panasonic Lumix, and Fuji which are just as good or possibly even better. My favorite is the Panasonic Lumix FZ-200 with Leica lens but you're stuck in a rut created by clever and effective advertising.

Thank you one and all. I did go to Best Buy and decided on the Canon after I had a good feel of the others. Today I kept pressing the little flash button to the left of the hot shoe, expecting the flash to pop up. Nothing happened, After several attempts, I decided that the camera must be faulty, so I took it back for an exchange, No problem, They gave me another one. When I got back home I tried to open the pop up flash by pressing the little button marked with a flash symbol. No luck so I did something that I rarely do (read the manual). Much to my surprise, I found that the pop up was not automatic and you have to lift it up by hand. It does not even pop up in a dark room. Apart from that, Great Great pictures on a trial run.

We've all done that. Not read the manual first. Now, I usually read the manual before I embarrass myself. Hope you love your camera as much as I love mine.

Well, ok, I can't stand the suspense-----so what does the little button with the flash symbol actually do??

Do you know what! I really cant see what use it is. When the flash is popped up the button turns the flash to automatic so that it flashes when needed. I must be too thick. Why would I pop the flash up if I did not need it?. Maybe someone here will enlighten me. getting old is so much fun.

I think you'll find that the flash button works only when the flash itself is lifted. Check out page 142 and following in the manual. When the flash is lifted, pressing the button lets you adjust things like flash exposure compensation, slow synchro, flash exposure lock, 1st or 2nd curtain shooting, maybe other options. I don't have the camera at hand right now and may be misremembering, but I think these options may be available only in one of the PATM modes, not in the automatic ones.

Thank you so much. I will go to those modes and see what I can find. It just seems common sense to me that a button so marked, would pop the flash up. Live and learn, on UHH.

Thanks for this! Now this is why I love this forum---I keep relearning things I thought I'd learned a year ago!
