I understand this... to me it is the difference in whether or not you are trying to sell the result. It's always nice to have people appreciate your work. When I quit trying to sell oil paintings I was a lot happier and my painting got better.

This is a common claim, and to some extent, it must be true. Unless you are being paid for your pictures, you must surely shoot for personal reasons.

But a lot of people say they shoot only for themselves, then ask for others' opinions of their pictures. Unless they get substantially unqualified praise, they reject any advice or criticism on the grounds that they are shooting only for themselves.

There is a certain inconsistency in this.

Any thoughts?

I feel that some of the time, people are so impressed with their own skills that they post something in an effort to get their ego stroked(I have been guilty of this) Then when someone finds problems with their work it is like a slap in the face.
Their first reaction is internal "how dare they, My photos are better than the crap they they have posted!" (again, I am guilty of this)

The trick is to hold off on the 'how dare you' post and come back an hour later. When I do that I usually find that the advice is correct. And if I still do not agree with the advice given, no harm done.

In my opinion, this is the best answer!

If you're dissatisfied with your pics, then of course it makes sense to try to find out how to get them closer to your personal vision.

But when I'm doing a critique, I try to say, "What were you trying to achieve here?" Then, based on what they say, I'll try to suggest as many ways as I can think of, to help them get closer to what they want.

It's the people who reject any suggestions that freak me, especially if they then say, "I don't care what anyone else thinks". If they really didn't care, they'd not ask anyone else's opinion.

Cheers,

Mr. Hicks
i know EXACTLY what you mean. I have a friend who used to ask for my help when he had a problem with his truck,(my dad was an ASE certified master mechanic and taught me a lot about vehicles before he passed away). He kept having the same problem and would ask me and others what was wrong, then he would do what everyone else said to do. After about 3 years and spending $3500.00 chasing the problem he sold it to a guy he worked with. Last summer his friend drove the truck to a cookout and when my friend asked if it was fixed he said yes...A wiring harness had a short and it cost less than $50.00 from a junk yard!!! 3 years I tried to tell him this...Some people just don't listen..

I really like Roger's reply here. Many times people with very helpfull views fail to get them across because they start their input with "You did this or this wrong, here's what you're supposed to do", as opposed to "What are you trying to accomplish, and how can I help?" I understand the ego portion of "I know how to fix this, just listen to me" but it's always easier to explain an oppinion to a receptive listener than an antagonistic one. And besides, as others have said, they may truly think their picture is not broken and were going for a specific effect.

Have you seen the B&W photos of Vivian Maier? Pictures never shared with anyone, until an unpaid storage fee upon her death gave a real estate agent a look at over 100,000 photos from what we would could consider a pro by any measure in today's standards. Tubs of the photos, slides and negatives - including 100's of undeveloped film - were uncovered and only now are coming to the light. A recent NY gallery opening gave the world a glimpse of stunning photos kept hidden from view by the photographer. Visit the Vivian Maier site.

I started with a Nikon FM... A treasured gift from My Dad... Worked for an "in-house" Ad agency for 11 years... Stills, up to 4x5, 16 and 35mm motion films, video production, etc... My portfolio includes Better Homes and Gardens... Only thing I truly know is if I didn't "learn" anything about photography today, I spent the day in bed... "Semper Fi" In Country 71-73... jim

But here's my point; I have a picture of a tree across from the Dunkin' Donuts shop in N. Conway NH that I took about 5 years age during an exeptional year for fall colors, and is probably the most colorful single tree I have ever seen. How many of you were there that year/day and did you get a picture? Well, when you see it, I hope you are as impressed as I was with (in this case) natures beauty.

I agree that you should shoot for your self, but you can only progress with some cc if it is helpful. We all have are preference just as with anything else we need to consider. I personally do not like a cluttered foreground unless it adds the pic. I like to shoot a little bit underexposed except the subject. Bokeh is good example, I have had people comment that every thing is not in focus.I do not like over saturated colors, but some do. Ever one has to develop there on style

Yes, their own style; watch, learn, listen and be flexible. regards

First, I've got to find the disc it's on (along with some others I'd like to post), and then find where the instructions are for posting. Also, I need to find out if there's something I should do to protect my 'intellectual property' (any suggestions would be appreciated). (it's too late to protect my intellect, it's long gone!)

"protect my 'intellectual property"... Never post a multi meg pic... Never alter the orig. pic... Then you have "proof"... Watermark them across the front...

I shoot only for myself and I do post for C&C, without the honest feedback I have received my pictures would still be OOF and my children would all have green skin tones. I don't think I have every used the excuse "I shoot only for myself" actually I don't think I have ever posted an excuse, I've asked for clarification on statements and always made sure I've thanked those that have taken the time to offer me their ideas on how to improve.

Well, here's where my ignorance shines through; what's a 'multi-meg' picture, and how do I watermark them?

When you post here it has a check box next to it... SAVE ORIGINAL... If your pic is in size 1024 x 768 pixels, and you have that checked, thats what someone can download... I reduce the image size to something manageable and "screen friendly" of all photos I post... That way folks don't have to scroll to see the entire image... Watermarking is a tool in Photo Shop or other graphic image programs that lets you add a "ghost image" or text right across the pic. It stops someone from just copying the pic without somehow editing out your watermark...
