Susie, looks like your lighting is lower than the subjects head. The one on the right is a little too bright. Cut some of its power, or move it further away and raise it up.
Can I send you some example by personal message? It's always easier to see it than trying to imagining it.

You need to use a flash meter for studio portraits.
I purchased a Sekonic Flashmate L-308S for under $200.00.
Once I learned to operate it my problems went away.

You may want to consider tethered shooting. My wife and I took Christmas pictures of our neighbors in their home last week. We used a Canon 7D thethered to a 17 inch laptop via Adobe Lightroom 3. Instead of trying to judge the images with the camera LCD screen, we were able to view them instantly on the larger screen. We were shooting RAW, so manipulating white balance, exposure, and adjusting lighting with all of the control Lightroom offers during the shoot, was invaluable. I wouldn't do another indoor shoot without being thethered!

Just thought to contribute a little FYI. This is for low contrast, but some contrast, on the subject.

That's an incredible set up/explanation/view. Thanks!

If all you need is to vent, or quiet support, hey, that's easy...

Yup, just needed to vent.

Venting is positive and the feedback [ if any ] may or may not be? Just keep shooting, learning and do not be too very hard on yourself. regards

Send us a photo of your studio. We need to see your set up. Do you use a light meter? Smile Bob

I'm not sure, but I think I mentioned earlier, or in another post...Our studio is set up with 2 ends of usable walls. We use portable vinyl type backdrops on either end, Therefore, requiring us to move 2 softbox lights. We don't use a meter. I asked Tammy about metering, and while she has used one previously, but she doesn't anymore. She has great eye for lighting. And tells me I am getting better with each shoot. I told her I would like to just "get it" without having to depend on extra equipment, and she assures me I will. This particular shoot was just a very bad day. I've had much better days since then. =)

Sue, you have the skill and your edited image was very acceptable...perhaps take control of yourself composure, before you make the exposure. Your subjects are cooperative and willing, but at times it takes a bit of time to get comfort and relaxed shoot. You know the technique and know the errors. It was a great vent and next time will be diamonds. L3
