How can this be an Obama thing. Busch order it, congress has renewed it. Everyone hates it? The people that you elected like it. As old Senator Sam Ervin from NC said..."It is not the job of the American government to protect America from Americans".

Yep - it's George's baby, and Obama adopted it. A bipartisan fix.


Co-authors of the patriot act have publicly stated that this was not the purpose of that section of the act. Looks to me like the Holder Justice Department had done its own thing in this matter. What a surprise.

Don't like it one bit... And yes, it was started by Bush, that does not make it any better or worse, just how much of our freedoms will we let these extremists take from us... I have to laugh when I consider just how totally Bin Laden has won his war with the US.. He has robbed our Treasury of trillions, he has degraded our grannies and young daughters as they pass through TSA check points, and he is laughing with the crabs at the bottom of the sea as we continue to strip ourselves of freedoms and run towards the police state he will have given license to our government to create... I would say his victory was complete. This is just the tip of the iceberg, look at PRISM and realize that this is happening all over the country as well.

"Nothing to worry about" is a little naive I think. You could be innocently communicating with or doing business with someone who is (unaware to you) closely watched by the CIA/FBI/NSA and you just happen to say something that could be falsely construed as being part of illegal activity.
Or you are simply joking around with friends, perhaps discussing a purely hypothetical "what if" scenario over the phone or by email.

Do you really want to be paranoid about what you say, think, or who you have contact with?

I am not nearly as concerned about the loss of privacy as I am the loss of constitutional protections, can our government do as it sees fit to our constitution? Does our constitution only hold meaning when the government says it does? Do we not need be concerned about an even greater danger?

A totally Free Society, and a Totally OPEN Society cannot coexist as long as there are people that want to harm you. It is a sad fact, but a fact none the less.

Not always the case. I'm a conservative that believes Bush the younger and President Obama are paddling the same canoe. Wasn't right when Bush did it and it isn't right now.
