If you like to hike, you really should make the climb to the Chimneys. It's a beautiful if somewhat upsy hike and the view from the top is fantastic. I lived and worked in the Gatlinburg area for many years and you never get bored with the beauty of the area.

Spring in the Smoky Mountains is spectacular. You'll have an abundance of wildflowers to choose from. Here are some of the best hikes for wildflowers:

My favorite are the mountain laurel on Spence Field. The mountain top is covered in them.

Also, if you want to get away from the crowds and traffic of Gatlinburg, stay in Townsend, TN, it's also known as the quiet side of the Smokies.

The park spent last summer refurbishing the Chimney Tops trail too and I understand it's much better. Heading there this April to check it out!

I'll second the snakes lookout. I have hiked all over the country; CO, MT, WA, UT, Idaho, MA, NH, NJ, NY and VA. Only in Shenandoah did I encounter snakes. Rattlers. If you've never heard one of these guys rattle your in for a surprise as to their loudness. I certainly was. I got the hell out of the area pretty quick.

I'll make sure and wear my heavy boots and keep my eyes open; wouldn't mind a chance to photograph them. I caught and collect snakes as a kid but none that were poisonous.

Another photographer I ran into took a photo of a rattle snake on the Laurel Falls Trail later the same morning I was there.

I really liked Golden Morning. The others were great as well. Run into any snakes?
