I like the Op/Tech harness - can hang down the middle from my shoulders or under either arm. Can also use the straps attached to the camera as a hand strap.

I'm not a fan of using a camera strap at all, they always seem to either bi the way or interfere with movement.

I do use a hand strap that attaches to the top and bottom of the camera and I slip my hand in and it stays there while I'm shooting, or just walking around in hand ready for action...

Me too. I feel it is not only more secure, but is more comfortable and allows me to catch shots more quickly. As part of the OpTech system I can easily switch to a sling or neck strap. Even clip it to my belt for when I need both hands free.

The problem is most straps are not very good. Those supplied with the camera are basically an advertising banner (look at the camera I've got! come steal it!), profoundly uncomfortable, almost impossible to adjust quickly. A lot of the after market products, adorned with pouches and pockets, again are uncomfortable and awkward.

I usually don't use a strap at all. I have a tether that attached to one corner of the camera and provides me with the security needed against dropping the body. This is a lot less intrusive and easier to manage than the standard strap.

Most photo journalists, put on a strap with no name on their cameras and use black electrical tape over the name on the front of the camera. Keeps them from getting hurt should someone decide they want that kind of camera. When they are on scene photographing and someone asks what kind of camera they use, they usually say it is a cheap XXXXXx that they keep in their car. (xxxx = wal mart or a a made up name)

I mostly use a tripod and wish I could buy a sky hook for my strap. Please let me know when one is available. Some call it insurance.

OK. Now that the problem and solution has been has been well stated, let's have some specific solutions. Specific brands of decent straps would be a welcome addition at this point.

Wacha got that works well?

I use the Double Sling and Classic Strap. Very comfortable. All of their products are interchangeable, and they use both male and female snaps, so the camera is always snapped on the right way.

I was sitting down by the harbour watching the old sailing trawlers. Over a period of about 5 minutes - I was astonished to see that out of the 4 people who walked past me with a decent camera, every one was holding it with one hand and the strap dangling near the ground!

Just careless, too much money, too little sense or a great trust in insurance?

I just bought the Dual Harness from Op/Tech and love it. Great for using two cameras and I think much safer than my "over the shoulder, pain in the neck" straps..

I have not used a camera strap in 20+ years, and have had my cameras in unfathomably precarious if not dangerous locations never with an issue.

Camera straps were great when I did photojournalism, but proved a professional nuisance otherwise. I actually had more damage to my cameras BECAUSE of camera straps than ever without them.

YIKES! That is how my husband holds MY camera. It makes me so nervous especially when we are on a bridge or over water. Drives me crazy.

Camera straps have always been a sore point with me. You buy a very expensive camera; e.g., Canon 5D MKII, and Canon includes in the box a camera strap that you really should not use. The first problem is not that it is a "pain in the neck", it is their "branding".

I understand the concept of branding, and these companies wanting their name and brand paraded about for all to see; however, it is not in my best interests to advertise in bright bold letters all over the camera strap the brand and model of my very expensive camera. Why not wear a jacket that states on the back. . ."this person has a very expensive camera, and could be easily sold for lots of drug money"

I have a concealed carry permit. I happen to carry a very expensive Kimber .45, and you can damn sure bet I don't walk around with a shirt or jacket that says "Real men carry a Kimber." Any camera company who spends money on such a "branding" strap is just plain stupid, as most intelligent people put them in the back of the closet and never use them. Instead they most often choose to buy a soft on the neck, no branding aftermarket strap that also has well made quick-release fasteners on both ends.

Now I certainly don't need to tell these people how to run their business. Yet, as you likely have already guessed, I am going to do just that. Let's say Canon were to drop the big red and white branding, and include a plain soft on the neck strap that includes a quickrelease on each end. Two things are likely to happen. First, their costs for the included strap would likely go down, and the straps would actually get used in almost all cases (happy customers). Secondly, Canon could get the jump on all of the rest of the camera makers with some very creative ads and marketing regarding the "new and improved" safety strap, that would also very likely sway a 20% new customer base over to Canon (mostly away from Nikon).
Camera straps have always been a sore point with m... (show quote)

Cannot understand why someone has not come up with accessory hardware for quick release straps from the strap lugs. If someone has, please clue me in.

Carrying the camera with the strap dangling is worse than having no strap at all. Do you ever watch Kai on digitalrevtv? he never uses a strap, and he swings the camera around like it was a bag of chips.

Jerry, he is a trip! He's nuts, but funny. And cusses like a sailor!

I went to the hardware store and found a couple of snap links that I connected to the strap and snapped on the camera. Works great and extends the strap slightly to allow me to comfortably slide my arm through, after I slipped the camera over my neck. Also allows me to easily and quickly change straps when the mood strikes me. Cheap fix! You may have to search a bit for the right links for you camera
