There seems to be a continued debate on UHH concerning the use of thee tripod socket with a camera strap. Opinions run rampant Pro and Con some simply by personal choice ( due to the strap they have purchased) some by hearsay - some by perception - some by he said she said.
The manufacturers of course want us to believe the strap they sell is the best. Camera manufacturers seem to be mum on the topic as I have yet to see an OFFICIAL statement concerning this. An email from a Cam company rep is not an official statement.
realistically all cam straps can fail - tear, split, broken buckle ,snapped caribeener , etc just as all consumer products can fail
I have both a Black Rapid and an Op tech so no brand royalty with me- i find they both work well - that being said i have added to both systems my own added saftey strap
So Brand loyalty, hearsay , fear mongering, Bobs Uncle Tom says ..., opinions aside - How many member here on UHH have actually had a tripod socket fail ??? or Have first Hand knowledge of such failures- reading about it on the internet does not count. ???????
I will start I know first hand of none so 0
next ???
Also 0. Don't know of any first hand failures.

I never had a tripod socket fail, however an Op-Tech strap on my binocs failed. The plastic clip broke. Luckily I was putting them on my neck and had them in my hand. Would have been a major expense.

No failures here. Been using the tripod socket on lens or camera for about 5 years.

Don't be sorry, I wasn't suggesting that the camera in the photo was mine. It just appeared from your post that you were open to responses. From that particular post it's clear that tripod sockets do fail
just saying.
One good preventive measure is to inspect all straps, sockets, buckles etc. regularly, especially before or after use. Look for cracks, tears, loose threading and any other signs of stress. Often straps don't just go from perfect condition to broken in one instance.
O and O failures on both my 1ds mkII and mkiii. If it doesn't fail with these monsters attached as such i doubt that they will for most dslr cameras.
I know of 0 that have failed. However, I use a similar system that cost $0 and has never failed me.
I extended my camera strap using discarded narrow web straps from old cameras so that my camera rested at my hand. Placing the slick side of my Canon strap down, the strap slides easily when I raise my camera to shoot.
As when using any equipment, ALWAYS check your equipment before the shoot to make sure you have everything you will need and that it is I good working order.

The swivel where the caribeener and d-ring join on my Q-strap came apart while I was walking and the camera hit the ground. Got a new one and am now using a big split ring for safety. Fortunately, the camera was not damaged except for the lens hood. There's 1.

If you made cameras would you recommend hanging the camera from a tripod socket and then get blamed when it fails? Of course not!
Tripod sockets are designed to hold the camera on a tripod, not for jerking the camera around while you arent paying attention to it.
Camera lugs were made for camera straps, to support the weight of a camera and a modest sized lens, not huge telephotos. But even camera straps can fail.
Treat the camera strap as a safety device and carry the camera in your hand. If this is too much trouble, put it back in the bag and carry the bag.
