We were there Dec 27 2008. Heard that the cruise ship scheduled for the next day could not enter the harbor due to the winds. The islands are exposed and low. Roads outside of Stanley are all but nonexistent. Photo is our caravan to a penguin colony.

Being a Land Rover owner that looks like my kind of heaven.

Since im argentinian i just cant wait to see your pics...wild nature and an incredible amount of "war leftovers" could be fine in there...also the town could be a "pintoresque" thing to be shoot (since im not used to that type of constructions). Hope you dont face to many "limitations" at the moment of moving thru places.Enjoy it and take care of the mines!!!

Thank you for your interest, wildlife and nature are my main aims. Hopefully if there are any shots of the war sights they will show the futility of war and the waste of young men's lives.

I have added you to my buddy list and will be sure to let you know when I am posting the pics I have shot.

Looks like you have it covered nicely. Be prepared for some rough weather and most of all, have fun!

Spent 2 years there in '97 to '99.
Cold & bleak this time of year as its coming into winter. Winds from Antartica are bl***y cold. I would suggest waterproofs for the camera and warm clothing. The wildlife is good, if you know where to go. Sometimes it means hanging off cliff tops to get the cormorants and shags. Turkey vultures are easily filmed as you can get quite close, Cara Cara are easily spooked and are usually out in the stick's. Penguins in numerous places. Gypsy Cove is a good place for Beach photo's, bit like the carribean, only colder.
With regard to hiring lenses, when I was there you only had what you took, none for hire, unless you get friendly with the RAF guys, who may help. You will find the locals very, very friendly, especially at Goose Green. Have a great time and enjoy.

You must go to the Argentinian Cemetary, its a sad but poignant place and eerie.

Hi wonkytripod,
I was there in '82 and again a few years later. The wildlife is amazing! Penguins of course - Gentoos, Rockhoppers, King penguins etc. Sea lions, sea leopards, elephant seals. The Caracara eagle is abundant, giving ample opportunity for close ups - they're not particularly shy. Stanley, the main town, is worth a visit for local colour. Some of the military sites are at Mt Alice, Byron Heights, Mt Kent and Port San Carlos. Have a great trip. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The weather can be unpredictable as it can change several times in a day from a howling blizzard to bright sunshine. I used a medium telephoto and got some amazing shots,

Main question is when are you going as its winter down their at the minute if you are going between late November and early March it will be summer take up to your 300 and 2x and leave the 500 at home most of the wildlife will very nearly sit at the end off your lens if you don,t flap about to much . The tripod question is all down to oneself i took mine with me and a mono and did,nt use either for the month i was their also keep in mind if you use the local[bus plane] it has a 20kg baggage limit anything over you have to pay for. If you get the chance get to Sealion Island as most of the bird species can be seen there if you have not got a lot off time off and if you are based at Mount Pleasant they sometimes take the heli,s over for a day trip by the way was their in January

It's going to be a bit of a short notice thing, I will be doing some environmental health training with both military and civilians for 3 days. They have said that I can then have upto a week to do what I want until I have to fly back, could also have to do the same training on Ascencion as well. They have already told me my allowance for luggage will be 35 kilos to allow for my training aids etc. Will be flying with RAF and will be based at Mount Pleasant. I was supposed to be there in December.

Thanks for advice regarding lenses I was thinking that way myself.

Thanks for info, have many friends and relatives who were there in 82. I was deployed elswhere so missed it. It is aplace that I have always wanted to go but the cost has always seemed a bit steep so being paid to go has to be a bonus.

Once again thanks for info.

Strangely enough, I was an environmental health tech then. Take note of the advice about the weather - a possible wind chill factor of - 35 is no joke!
