Here's a recent photo of my grandson, taken in a sandwich shop. It was natural light, late afternoon.
Sometimes I find that I overcrop an image. I've included a lessor crop in number two, which includes a more pleasing subject but with more of the distracting background. Which, in general, do you like better?

On second thought, I decided to just replace the background altogether.
I like the first one the best.
Handsome young man.
I think #1 is cropped too close. I actually like #2 the best as the plain BG in #3 just does not look right.
The lighting on his face is really nice - definitely directional and a nice catchlight.

Thanks Captain C. I appreciate your comments. After posting it, I didn't really like #3 either. I even went back and turned the background entirely black, which I liked a little better, but that didn't seem quite right either.
It was just one of those situations where we were just having a sandwich, and when I looked over at my grandson, the light just seemed........ right. I happened to have my camera so I took the shot. Alas, I didn't have much choice of the background.
Thanks again for your thoughts.
thumbs up on #2! nice shot
I hear you. If only they'd grow up as fast as your own kids, which seems to take FOREVER. That 1st shot's a real keeper - his eyes tell me he's someone you can be proud of!

nice looking kid...I only see my gson every 2 weeks...this shot makes me realize I need to take more photos when he's around...he's 12 going on 20...I like all three because you have images of a love one...they all don't need to be perfect photos..thanks for sharing
removing the background dulled the pic. I agree that #2 is best! Very nice shot!
