Sorting slides

I have a lot of old slides, but the projector is a goner. Is there any new technology equipment that would allow me to sort those that I want to transfer into the computer?

A couple years ago I found a 'slide sorter' on eBay. It was the type that used a light bulb behind a white plastic screen. Doesn't any magnification, but holds 40 slides and is excellent for selecting/sorting/arranging. Do a search on eBay. You may find something that suits your purposes. Much cheaper than buying a projector.

There are readers that will transfer your slides to an SD card for uploading into your PC. I just found one at Office Depot of all places on clearance for around $24 and got it for my wife for Christmas. I'm not expecting much for $24 but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. OK, maybe I was hoping she would let me use it too.

Hamtrack,
You only have one choice a light box. Then after you decide, I would say look at high end resolution transfer units. The cheap ones do a decent job but you loose the high contrast of the slide.

I also use the Epson V500 Photo to scan slides, negatives and even meium format. Up to 9600dpi optical, it does an amazing job for the price. Was on sale at Office Depot for $129 a couple months ago.

Over the past 3 years I have been slowly digitizing some 1200 slides that my late uncle took over a 40 year period. I started with an HP scanner but when I did not care for the results I switched to using a light box and taking pictures with my macro lens and extender. About a year ago I picked up an Epson V600 and at first I liked the results. It then started putting a light red line on the slides. I then tried tethering into lightroom with good results. Recently I picked up Vuescan software and it seemed to clear up any problems I had with the Epson scanner, plus giving me a RAW master. The important thing is to take your time digitizing your slides and see what works best for you, By the way, Adorama makes there own light box which is very good

Not long ago I had the same problem. I went to e-bay and bought a Carousel 4400 projector for $69.00 and a Carousel "Stack loader" for $20.00. I received them in 3 days in absolute mint condition. I am in the process of sorting through about 15,000 slides and the system works perfectly.
