Just purchased a Bogen 3021 on ebay with a arca-swiss mount for $100. This tripod is not only sturdy and a little on the heavy side, but I am 6' and without the extension raised, I can look straight into the viewfinder of my Nikon. There are some used Bogen Manfrotto's out there. Just keep looking and you will find a steal.

I use a Manfrotto 190XPROB for my little lenses and an 0-55XPROB for long glass.
You might consider looking at KEH, Adorama, B&H, for used gear.
Ebay or Craigslist are also options, local camera stores might be a source.
We are in FLEA MARKET season and of course yard sales can be a great place to pick up goodies.
Forums such as UHH also have classifieds.
Local newspapers might have ads as well.
Good luck

missletoe, I understand the money thing.

I also understand that this will take some research.

What you have to be concerned with is the total weight of both the camera and your largest lens, including future lens. The tripod and head must be capable of supporting one and one half to twice the total weight of the camera and lens.

A few hundred dollars in comparison to the cost of the camera, lens and being without a camera, is worth it.

I just found this on line, do check it out. It will take care of your money problem.

I'm guessing a fluid head is the way to go. are sun pack tripods with a fluid head any good. I'm on a budget

No! Don't waste your money on cheap crap like that. Like anything, you get what you pay for.

Good tripods and ball heads are expensive. My Carbon fiber Vanguard Alta tripod and ball head was over $350. You can get aluminum for a lot less, but a decent quality tripod/ball head is still going to run you close to $200. Much less then that usually requires a big compromise in quality. Search the internet. Read reviews on line get familiar with the product lines from the main vendors, which will become apparent once you start doing some research.

Manfrotto tripods are certainly a top choice.

I was just browsing the Manfrotto tripod on Andorama and found a 15.5 lb max for $150 ad a $100 ball head not cheap but not out of the ball park either for NEW equipment.

I'm on a budget too, but it sprung for a Carbon Fiber Manfrotto 055XPRO3 and am glad I did. Solid as a rock, very light in weight, and will last for many, many years. Worth every penny. Remember "You get what you pay for!"

I have been happy with the Benro C-297EX Carbon Flip tripod, Retail price $500.00 (joke), sale price 339.00. This unit has the snap lag design which I prefer. It also has an adjustable screws on the snaps to re-adjust the tension, which in time will loosen, though I have not had to do that. I also purchased the Benro HD-28 3D Pan head,
450-752, retail 119.95 for $92.00. This has the leveling bubble, and adjustable tripod feet. Works well with my camera quick release, light to carry, and stays accurate.
The old saying.."you get what you pay for" used to be true, know what you need, do research (like you are doing here), quality does not have to cost you an arm and a leg.
Check E Bay and other used camera sites, it does not have to be all shinny and new.
