I have a Nikon d3100 and my camera has decided it only takes a manual white balance when it feels like it! grrr when I am doing a shoot sometimes I can't even take a white balance while doing a shoot it really sucks and is really embarassing! People are waiting and I can't get it to take! Has anyone ever had there camera screw up like this? It is happening more and more I think this is my good excuse to buy the upgrade I have been wanting ;)
I really need it to work cause it is in studio makes it worse lol thank god for lightroom but I don't want to rely on it I want it done right in camera :(

When shooting in AUTO mode or "Scene" modes the D3100 will often over ride manual settings in favor of automatic settings if the manual settings push the automatic recommendations out of their programmed parameters. Using Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority or Program modes will stop this from happening as the manual WB will be proprietary in those modes.

Try resetting your camera.

Hi Kurme, I have a d3100 also and had a problem with some of my shots, they had a pink cast to them when taken with auto WB, I still do not know why. What do yours look like? Try shooting in manual and see if that changes anything. if not reset your camera. I also found that after I noticed the pink cast that my lens was not zooming (18-55 kit). It had to be sent back for repair,do not know if it was related or not but seems to be OK now.

of course, if you shoot in raw, it makes no difference what your white balance is set on. You can easily correct it in PP.

If you're shooting jpg, then you certainly need to try to get it right in camera.

My Nikon doesn't like it when I try to take custom white balance off of the gray card--I turn the card over and use the white side and have no problem setting the custom white balance. My Nikon doesn't like purple and renders it as blue. With custom white balance purple is actually purple. I shoot in RAW and JPEG.
