True, however the text cited stated that this was for "Security Reasons" not copy right infringements.

If it was for copy rights then they need to say so, as I believe most people would understand that.

Maybe there's something to this—that DSLRs are a security risk—but I can't think of what it is. As has been said, photos in Boston were an aid.

I too am suspicious that the ban has everything to do with preventing photos of the race so that track owners or other interests can control images for the purpose of making money or perhaps limiting liability if something goes wrong.

I suppose they cover this stupidity by saying, "Better safe than sorry." Are the guards going to be checking bridge cameras to make sure their lenses are not removable?

So, after consulting with "several law enforcement authorities," they decided to ban cameras? Remember Forrest Gump? "Stupid is as stupid does."

Here's the complete list.

1) Coolers (Styrofoam coolers and ice will be available for purchase infield)
2) Cans, glass bottles or containers
3) Camcorders
4) Cameras with detachable lenses
5) Cameras with lenses more than six inches in length
6) Tripods
7) Purses larger than 12 inches in any dimension
8) Pop up and patron tents, no poles or stakes of any kind
9) Grills
10) Alcoholic beverages
11) Thermoses
12) Backpacks
13) Luggage (includes briefcases)
14) Duffel bags
15) Wagons
16) Umbrellas
17) Weapons (including knives)
18) Fireworks
19) Noisemakers and air horns
20) Laser lights and pointers
21) Mace, pepper spray or other personal defense sprays

#19 is "Noisemakers," but that could be a problem. If you are bringing in a diaper bag, you must have a small child with you (a noisemaker). :D

I think next year, all attendees should be naked and carrying nothing.
I suppose they cover this stupidity by saying, &qu... (show quote)

I'll watch at home, where I have all of these things.

Now that I think about it, wasn't it because of capturing images of the bombers that authorities were able to find them so quickly? Shouldn't we encourage photography rather than limit it?

 Agreed.

My question is, why would anyone want to go watch horses running around in circles, much less take pictures of the activity?!

Now, now.....not circles, ovals. Actually, I agree with you in regards to the race itself. I've never been to a horserace and never had any desire. Only ever went to a Nascar race once...when I was invited by a friend who was (and is) a professional photographer and who had free passes from Kodak. That was to Daytona in the year of Desert Storm, I think 1991. I actually enjoyed it, partly because it was a new experience, party because it was free, partly because Ernie Irvin won the race while driving the Kodak car (and thereby making our day 'successful') and partly because there was a strong patriotic feeling there on that particular day. Have never been back and have never had a desire to go back. Maybe kind of a bucket list kind of thing. It was an enjoyable day, but need not be repeated. Dave

Thanks Bruce. Good info. This was on my bucket list, now they can go Screw themselves. I don't think they yet realize how many people will no longer go.

It is not uncommon for public events to ban interchangeable lens cameras because of the annoyance to other spectators. They assume that some interchangeable lenses will be extra long.

They also frequently warn the public that any photo(still or video) taken on the premises can only be used for person use not commercial.

My feeling on the camera ban is that it could be handled the same way as caring it on a air plane - show that it works and move on. ( Cameras bombs don't work)

All this ban stuff gives me a chuckle. We have an oval dirt track here that sports various types of races that is well attended. The only thing not allowed to be brought in from the outside but never checked for is alcohol. I would estimate that roughly 10 to 12% of the patrons are open carry and there are probably a similar number cc. Never any issues and everyone has a great time.

No matter how many things are banned and checked for someone with evil intentions can always and easily find a method to skirt the bans and searches. The whole paranoia is irrational. People seem to become hysterical when terrorism is in the context. Statistically we are far far more likely to die from medical malpractice or police than terrorists but nobody gets hysterical about the facts, just the emotions and the statists are all giddy about the endless opportunities for growth of power and mischief that enables.

Better to try and get a press pass as a stringer. Then you can get in with your 600 mm and snub your nose at the gestapo security. !

Please Bruce, there is no need to apologize...People are becoming paranoid, and with good reason when it comes to backpacks, coolers and the like. I can empathize with that. But with cameras? Does this ban extend to cameras that use film, and can change lenses? Have people used tripods in the past? Lenses longer than 6 inches? What are professional sports event photographers going to do, or are they exempt. I know you have nothing to do with the powers that be. Im just making a comment and really i dont think you need to answer for the great state of Kentucky. I do feel that if the ban on these cameras is upheld at the Derby, then it could spill over into all sports events all over the country, which would really be not good.
