Calming the Kids?

I've been asked to shoot a birthday party for 3 year old's, great stuff. I've been told that one of the children, twins, the little girl, is afraid of flashes !!

I've scouted the hall, its very dark even with the lighting from the high ceiling, gonna set up a couple of remote flashes behind brollies, but for close up work, what to do?

I came up with the idea of a 'puppet' on my ring flash, photo attached, what do you think, good idea, or a bit weird and scary?

Can you make the face happier? It looks worried.

Good call, thank you, I can try and lift the eyes a little, the problem is I can't think of a way of building in a smile?

Maybe make a tongue like a lapping dog?

Thanks for the feedback :)

Maybe the use of a softbox on your flash will make the light less startling for the little girl.

It will, you are spot on, and I have used it for adults, I just thought the puppet might have been more approachable. Thank you for a good point though.

The puppet might scare her too. It is so big and might be overwhelming. The soft box is probably a better choice. Or you might consider a diffuser that is placed in front of the flash and directs the light toward the ceiling.

Do you have a chance of seeing the little one before the shoot. Maybe let her see it once or twice before to get her used to it?
