agree with the others. The UV is for protection more than anything else.
And then when you do break the uv filter, the glass from the UV filter scratches your lens.
Dave Kay, I have broken a UV to use the ring for making a custom filter; these filters usually contain a plastic material and do not break easily. The larger the diameter, the more easily broken. Your point is well taken, but that line of defense against a direct hit to the lens or more commonly a scratch or finger print is more relevant.

All I can say is that in 40+ years of Photography, I have never damaged the front element on my lens. However, I have to agree with you that the UV filter will probabaly keep finger prints off the front element.
Agreed, again, but somewhat different in terms... in all my 40+ years in photography I have never damaged a UV filter. ... well once at Kill Devil Hill helping a hang glider get off we all flipped and I landed on the back side of the dune... lens (200mm) down in the sand. Those M-42 threads ground with grit for the remainder of the camera life,,, very fine silica. Other than that, Never a problem.
On my ZS20 camera however it is good protection of that metal leaf lens cover. d/p
When I mentioned $50 - that is $50 for a 77 B+W or Tiffen from e-bay. Normal price for these gems is about $100. UV and Haze are different. Haze cuts through it by reducing the effects on the blue - thus making it standout better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_coatingThis Wiki explains a lot about the physical/manufacturing of coatings. Oh, Off subject... no.... coatings are important issue to the world of filters and lenses. Check out:
http://www.canonrumors.com/tech-articles/all-about-lens-coatings/Diagrams and text explain coatings, multi coatings, etc as related to camera lenses and filters. Readable...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e9TUIC-Dtk Always on stage this guy demon-straits why, tho it degrades his image somewhat, he uses filters. To protect his lenses of course.
Watching his fun distruction demo what I observed is that the damage he caused was not to the glass but to the rim of the filter. Humm, based on his test, I would shoot out the glass in the filter and use the filter ring to reinforce the "filter-end threads" of the lens. Adding the ring doubles the thickness of the lens threads and puts the filter (glass holding, now empty) portion out front of the lens getting the abuse of a drop or blow.
http://photographybanzai.com/2012/06/14/camera-lens-uv-filter-test-does-coating-make-a-difference/Is an article plus video reference showing the value of different coatings. I am glad to see my cheap filters are better than those with the Canon brand name! Say What!! Yes, Canon brand was worse. The tester uses a UV filter because, "easier to clean a filter and safer than cleaning a lens."
I have written info@zeikos.com for technical information. Zeikos make a lot of low cost equipment, accessories for cameras.... of course UV Filters.
But that article is only the tip of the Lose Faith in God and Other Name-Brands" Ice-burg. As the Tabloids would say "Read the Shocking News At:
http://www.lenstip.com/120.1-article-UV_filters_test_-_supplement.htmlStarts with Objective Scientific Setup rather than our usual subjective testing. Price vs Quality chart is shocking!!!
Well start reading UglyHedgeHogians....I am taking off my UV filter and going out to shoot quality photos... wish me luck that I do not scratch my lens or bend those then protect the lens thin shutter metal closure on the ZS20.
