They are daily visitors to my clearing in the woods. Here are the male and female. Note the differences. She definitely has a more stylish "do".

Howdysmom: Beautiful bird, great shots! My in-laws had pileates in Birmingham Al, but not is North Al.

the shot of Mrs. Pileated is very good, he's not too shabby either but she is perfect.

Beautiful birds and wonderful photos , we have them show up here in Arkansas sometimes very hard to get good photos of.
Drawback to them is they sure can kill a tree quickly .

great! I have one close to the house, but I've yet to see him/her. too many trees.

Woodpeckers do not kill trees! They feed in insects that are already infesting a tree. The insects are the ones that do the damage. Pileated holes are made in a portion of the tree that is ALREADY compromised.
