You need to make sure that the lab turns OFF all the auto-corrections it does. Otherwise, the machine will change everything. Talk to the lab people, they can do that. If they can', get thee to another lab.

Once you got that settled, then match test prints to the monitor. Is your program set to the sRGB colorspace? It needs to be.

This goes back to the question of calibrating the monitor and printer with a Colormunki.

Is it worth the money?

No, you don't need to calibrate, unless this is a business.

I just make a few prints, get them done, hold them against the monitor, and make the monitor look like the prints, using the contrast and brightness controls of the monitor. Good enough for personal work.

The prints need to resemble the monitor not the other way around.

Usually the prints come out much darker than they appear on the monitor.

No, you make the monitor look like the PRINTS.

Then, on your next batch, the monitor will show you, what the PRINTS will look like. So you will know to brighten it up.

All the above is going to help, but realize, a print will NEVER look exactly the same as your monitor.
The monitor is projected light and the print is reflected. So even though they will not be identical, the monitor should give a realistic approximation of your prints.

that's just like how E-6 slide film works and print film works....

when you up load your photos at target , wallgreens, cosco, you should have a button that says( edit,) at that time you can add contrast , and reds, blues or you can adjust, to fit your color needs.if they have the same system that i use.
