The only bit of information I could find relative to the 1857 date was that the Qing Dynasty contributed a few carvings until 1911.

That could make sense (1857) here then. Somewhere I have photos of the Tiger Balm Garden carvings, from Hong Kong. Very large, colorful, protrayals of Chinese Gods, Demons & Myths as I recall. Taken back in the early 60's.

The rock carvings of Baodingshan at Dazu, China are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The carvings were created in a Buddhist grotto between 1179 and 1249 AD. There are more than 50,000 sculptures representing the highest level of Chinese cave temple art.

Captivating carvings...great job photographing them

Outstanding! Beautiful images and very clever how some are protected from the elements.

Appreciate your nice comment. It was amazing how well most of the sculptures have survived after 1000 years or so.

I also was unaware of the site until my wife and I took a tour of China and the carvings were on our itinerary.
