Thanks for the suggestion. And what is your favorite walk round gun?...........Some on the site will abviously be carrying their .44 Magnums or AK47s......

I live near a city and I have also been paralyzed for 24 years - going on 25 - and have NEVER had any problems with someone trying to steal or rob me - and I take photos where ever I happen to be - in or out of the city. As Phoenix said - common sense prevails. And to repeat him most of us aren't pros. Shoot - the most danger most of us face is some errant mosquito biting us.

My "travelin' light" camera is my D300 with the 18-270 Tamron on it, plus I usually throw the Nikon 12-24 in the bag just in case I need something wider than 27 mm equivalent. I use wide angle a lot!

When using my D700, it has the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 on it, plus I carry the 14-24 f2.8 in the bag along with the lesser-used 70-200 VR f2.8.

I'm an event photographer. Zooms allow me to get a wide view of an event or area of it and then to almost instantaneously zoom in to get detail of a smaller area of action. There is just no way I could function with one single focal length lens, or even just one zoom, although the 18-270 comes close. Now, if its optical quality just equaled what I get with the D700 and its lenses, that would be super!

Now thats a walk around lens...fast natural perspective with great detail, and best of all the entire electronics package including af works.

I do love when this question surfaces. It's always interesting to see what people are shooting with. My 80% always on lens is my 50 1.2L. It skips around the city with me most of the time.

I keep a Nikon 28-300 on my D700 when I'm out and about with no particular agenda. It is heavy, but it is versatile.

My equipment is heavy and really prefer use as studio camera, but if I had a walk around lens it would be the Canon 50mm f/1.2 though still would be a heavy setup on my Canon 5DII.

In my bag is a Tamron 18-270 PZD, a Nikon 50mm 1.4 fixed lens, Nikon D3100 and a Nikon Coolpix P100 for backup which I have never had to use. I shoot baseball and have a 400mm fixed lens which for the most part stays at home......

When digital cameras became available in 2000, I went totally to Nikon Coolpix and now havee a Nikon S10 with a 10x smooth zoom for framing and a Coolpix S630 with 7x zoom for pocketable camera... I used to carry two Canon bodies - one for color and one for B&W and four lenses... it's interesting to read all the discussion about lenses for SLRs but I would never go back to needing a camera bag...

I hope the muggers aren't reading this.... people seem to be walking around with VERY expensive glass! I wonder... do you REALLY go out for a walk with a 70-200 f2.8 or a 70-300 attached?

I don't pack just a camera/lens around. And in answer to the second question you asked, it's most always something chambered for the 45 ACP cartridge. (smiley face goes here)

Rick -My 'observations' were somewhat tongue in cheek and questioning the practicality of some of these big and heavy lenses! It does make me wonder if some of the answers are to the question "what would be my dream walkaround lens" though! What people actually are taking may be slightly different? There's aslo a big difference between taking it out of the house and walking around certain areas with 5 grand+ hanging round your neck! We all have different choices and priorities I guess and some make wiser decisions than others! Good luck on your next walk........
br Rick -My 'observations' were somewhat tongue i... (show quote)

There are places I wouldn't go regardless of whether I was carrying a camera or not, but basically, if I'm prepared to go there, I'm (normally, not always) prepared to take a camera. Even an expensive one.

What I can't imagine is carting a huge, heavy, long, slow zoom as a 'walk-around' lens.

Don't worry about the 'Rick': we've all made worse mistakes often enough.

Cheers,

R.

I love Sigs...I've been known to be in possession of a .380 auto...loaded with nasty rounds. But not often...don't need it where I live. No CC in "The People's Republic Of Daley" I also have Sig 9mm and 45 acp....reserved for special social applications.
