My standart "walkabout town" lens in Nikon 18-70mm. I know it's an old, discontinued lens, but it has served me well. If, I'm out in the boonies or travelling, I have a 70-300mm w/ kenko 1.5 teleconverter, 18-70mm, & 50mm 1.8 in a fanny pack that I carry. Also have Lowpro backpack, but don't always carry it.

I have observed one critical detail here, I need to consider using my 1.8 50mm more than I am.

I have a D-300 with a Nikon 16-85 mounted approx 90% of the time. Love this lens!

On 24x36mm, film or digi, 35/1.4 or 50/1.5. I find zooms too slow in maximum aperture AND too slow to use: the time I spend tweaking focal length means that I'm more likely to miss the moment. With a prime, there's more incentive to be in the right place at the right time.

But for street photography, although I normally prefer 35 and 50, I've used just about every lens I possess at one time or another. There are examples here from 15mm to 300mm: http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/ps%20street.html

Cheers,

Nice advice and even nicer website. Thanks Roger

If I take only one lens, I want my 28-135, 3.5-5.6 zoom. Granted, not highly regarded lens but I get very crisp images and I have a fairly good range of shooting possibilities. On occasion I have opted for another lens and been sorry. If I'm taking two, I usually take my 20mm prime and 70-200 2.8 IS for general shooting. I usually take more than one lens and other stuff in my backpack when I'm out in the boonies as you never know what you may find.

I am in love with my Nikon 18-200 mounted on my D300s with a 50 mm f1.8 as my second choice. There are better and mor expensive lenses but I find these are the two I use most.

Looks like you have it covered for in town. If you are going out into the open you may want a more powerful zoom.

I use my 18-105 for a walk aroung go to lens. But I love my 80-200 F2 but the weight of the lens does come into play when you are on the go and taking random shots. The 18-105 does give a nice range for taking photos and is not to bulky or heavy.
