I really cannot see the need to update firmware on a camera unless there is a bug in the current firmware. It is like updating drivers on a computer. You may have the most up to date driver but is it any better? Probably not.
Updating software that works fine seems to me to be a waste of time. The exception would be if the new software on your computer fixes a bug, increases functionality or improves security.
On a camera, security is not an issue. New software will not make the sensor more sensitive or the image sharper. If there is a bug, it should have been discovered and fixed long before you bought your camera. If you don't see the results of a bug in your use of the camera, it isn't important anyway.

There are more reasons to update firmware than to fix bugs. Manufacturers include improved features, better performance, additional features in updates. The last firmware update for the Canon 7D made the camera a whole new model upgrade.

the advantages of firmware updates is that it either corrects a problem that has taken place with the software versions in cameras. Firmware updates are meant to correct of remedy those errors. In some instances firmware updates provide additional features that you may take advantage of inside of the camera and settings
i.e. the firmware upgrade or update for the Canon 7D allowed for more in camera cropping of images.
I agree that Canon does a poor job of not only notifying owners of firmware updates. I have registered every piece of Canon equipment I own and have never received a notice from Canon firmware update is available, I also am a member of the Canon CPS at the Gold Level I might add, and given this extra cost benefit have never received a notice of firmware update.
The simple way to download and install a firmware update is to download the firmware update to your machine, and the fact that it's a Mac or a Windows based operating systems makes no difference. When the download is complete open the firmware update, take a memory card copy the update to the memory card, you need to make sure that the is blank and does not contain other files that might make it more complicated.

Can anyone tell me "what benefits" they saw after updating their firmware.

I must admit that I used to do it religiously, but never really saw any great improvement in performance. It's now several years since I updated my firmware, and I don't seem to be suffering from it.

There might not be a new firmware update for your camera model. It is best to read what the update addresses or correct before doing it.

I too am a registered Canon owner. I did receive one 7D firmware upgrade notice (the 2.0.0 upgrade). I did not receive notice of the 2.0.3 and I did not receive notice of the EOS Utility update. I have not heard any Nikon users chime in. Does Nikon do a better job of communicating and making upgrades easy to install??

Thanks Dun1

I appreciate you taking the time to provide the above information. I guess the bottom line for me, is that while ever I'm able to take photographs of a standard to which I have become accustomed, I really don't feel a need to upgrade the firmware on my camera. I never "Pre or Post Process" my shots in camera. Any PP that I feel I need to do, I will do on my computer, where I feel that I have more control.

When or if I encounter a problem that affects the every day use of my camera, I will look to solutions with firmware updates.

Call me a Fossil !

Cheers

NOTLguy I figure that aside from the setting I normally use when I start a shoot, that concentrating on getting the shots is enough for my feeble mind, much less trying to Pre process images. All of the corrections or edits I perform are done in Post Processing. I also seldom delete files from the cards during a shoot for fear that I might wind up losing the images.
