The smaller number of your f-stop, the more "bokeh" or less Depth of Field you will achieve. That is what makes the background blurry. It should be done in camera rather than try to fix it later.

Thank you MomentsPhoto, I knew it was to be done camera side but wasn't sure of the setting. I just got a Pentax an older version and wanting to learn so much and the bokeh effect is one that I really want to learn especially when taking pictures of the grandchildren. Thank you GT for that interesting nugget of info, that should come in handy when actually trying to pose the mob of movement, which usually doesnt happen too often as they range from 13 months to 11yrs but with Christmas here the opportunity might arise
