I like wrabbits cartoon images. He's always there for a good laugh and many times some very good advice. Just my opinion.

Finally, I have it all. I still shop so the disease is never cured but now I don't buy any more. I just shop. I learned this from my third wife. Women love to shop. Men love to buy.

The sex-change operation went well.

The concept comes from the book " Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" in which women love to talk about stuff and men just act and solve problems.

Right, as long as you don't laugh at his advice.

There is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from "shopping," rather than "buying." I'll read a reivew of some fantastic piece of photo gear and think that I must have it. Then I wait a day, and I can't understand why I wanted it. I have about a hundred items in my Amazon Wishlist. All were "necessary" when I added them, but not now.

My wife gave me that book, but I never read it.

I'll reply to myself..

1. I'm not afraid of missing a shot. I just want the shot I compose then shoot to be the what I want.

2. I don't like changing lenses. So I want to consolidate to maybe 4 total lenses. Sell or give away to family members the old film stuff I had on the shelf from my f4 days.

3. Like I said I'm in good shape. I'm just not sure there is a need / advantage to the 17-55 or that it optically would blow me away over the existing 18-200 like the 70-200 did. Especially since it would be shot mostly with flash or outdoors. But it is just enough smaller to fit my bike bag and keep me at two lenses tops for travel.. My debate is can't I do everything the 17-55 does with the prime 35 in most cases with just a few steps.

4. Ok I'm in denial.. but at least one person believes I should buy the 17-55 :)

I just picked up the 17-55 mm a few months ago and I really love it. It's tack sharp and the auto focus is lightning fast compared to my kit lenses. I also have the 35 mm f1.8. I never use it. You say you should be able to do everything with the 35 that you can with the 17-55 with just a few steps. Here's something to think about, you might not always have that few steps available to get the shot you want.

If you want a reason to buy the 17-55 DX 2.8 I give you permission.
It's a fantastic event lens for a DX camera body.
It is a pro-level lens, like the 24-70 & was made when Nikon didn't offer a full-frame body.
It's heavy, expensive and very sharp.
Not that much smalller than the 24-70 though.

I'm sooo glad this is a DX lens. It sounds fantastic, but not for my D600. More money saved!

Dude you need the full 12 step program

More like the "12 stop" program... ;)

I feel the OP's pain, er, joy. I already had a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 (comparable to the 17-55, IMHO), but just had to get the 16-85mm for a walk-around lens. The wife and I went hiking in Sedona last weekend, and I practically drove myself nuts trying to pick which lenses to bring...17-50, 16-85, 10-20... She just ignores me and offers no help whatsoever, except to keep the phone number of the psych ward close by. So I brought all three, but then wished I had brought a telephoto for a couple of shots.

That's always the case. It never fails that you always find that you "forgot" something...

I am starting a Lens-a-holics rehab group...28 days of therapy...which includes only shooting with a bridge camera.

Only $35,000 for a month of reasonable psychiatric care...

Its a bargain.
