When I 'm having a picnic the wine usually does a good job of blurring things.
:-D

Seriously, though, I don't know the software, but couldn't resist.

In Picnik Effects tab choose Focal Soften .... that will only be in focus where you put the guide and blurry everywhere else ... hope that helps.

!!! I think you gave me the perfect solution! Tired of editing...off to the woods with a picnic basket!

Set the aperature to f/5.6 or even wider, f/4, if your lens allows. The wider the aperature, the shallower the depth of field.

Would this create the same effect as bocah?

I will have to agree that the wine is better but think after a little wine the whole picture might come out blurry

The smaller number of your f-stop, the more "bokeh" or less Depth of Field you will achieve. That is what makes the background blurry. It should be done in camera rather than try to fix it later.

Thank you MomentsPhoto, I knew it was to be done camera side but wasn't sure of the setting. I just got a Pentax an older version and wanting to learn so much and the bokeh effect is one that I really want to learn especially when taking pictures of the grandchildren. I am learning so much from this site, and it is becoming like an addiction for me, I must come here daily to see and learn. You all have a great day.

Also, the greater the distance between your subject and the background, the gereater the bokeh effect.

Thank you GT for that interesting nugget of info, that should come in handy when actually trying to pose the mob of movement, which usually doesnt happen too often as they range from 13 months to 11yrs but with Christmas here the opportunity might arise
