Happy weekend, UHH crowd. I am traveling soon to Vancouver (driving there from Seattle) and a bit later to Arizona (traveling between Antelope Canyon and Grand Canyon) and wondered if anyone has tips on what to see while I'm in and in between these places/tour guide tips/etc! Also, I am shopping for a travel bag with wheels that fits carry-on size requirements and wanted tips if you have them. Thanks in advance!

I don't know how long you are going to be in Vancouver for, but Stanly Park is a must see while you are there. Grandville Island market is another one to try and get to. If you have the time a side trip to Victoria on the ferry is also worth it as is a trip to Whistler, either one could be a day trip or over nighter.Have a great time....

My wife and I drove from Seattle to Vancouver last summer. I understand Vancouver has some very nice places to take photographs but, we love the drive up the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler. It is less than 100 miles north of Vancouver and was the site of the alpine events for the winter Olympics. If you go, I strongly recommend taking the Peak-to-Peak gondola between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. The views are amazing.

As far as a rolling travel bag/case is concerned, I love my Pelican 1514 hard shell case. It is the Pelican 1510 with removable dividers. It has wheels, approved for overhead bins, and is practically indestructible. Not only is it waterproof but it floats. I no longer worry when someone tries to jamb their carryon-that-should-have-been-checked in next to my camera. Here it is at B&H but you may be able to find it for less somewhere else. There are also videos on YouTube about what people put in it as well as torture tests.

Last July I vacationed in Arizona. We visited the northern and the southern rims of the Grand Canyon. The northern rim is where you will find the Sky Walk. Save your money on that one. The Sky Walk was so scratched you really couldn't see that well down into the canyon. Also you are not permitted to take any pictures there. They have their own photographers taking pictures and you can purchase them if you like. You'd get a better view standing next to the Sky Walk.
We went to Williams Arizona to take a train to the Grand Canyon. It was a fun trip. Food and entertainment on board.
My favorite place to visit was Sedona. It took my breath away. If you can make it to Sedona, make time to take the Pink Jeep tour. I will post pictures later. I have them in my computer at my office.

Remembered a thread recently about a rolling camera bag. Have a look at the link below or use the search facility here.

This might not be exactly what you're looking for, but how about a nice jacket that can also be used as a sleeping bag and a tent - the JakPak.

No idea on the luggage, but there has been a huge slide on Route 89 between Bitter Springs and Page, AZ that has made the road impassable. In fact the road has slipped downhill about 6 feet. You will have to make about an hour detour through Tuba City and then up "the back way" into Page.

And, of course, the mountains right above the city, such as driving all the way to the summits of Cypress Mtn. ( http://cypressmountain.com/ ) and the Mount Seymour ( http://www.onthesnow.com/british-columbia/mount-seymour/ski-resort.html ) or take the Grouse Mt. Gondola ( http://www.grousemountain.com/skyride ) or ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LogPLwCtqzk ). On the way up to the bottom terminal of the gondola is an awesome Capilano Suspension Bridge ( http://www.capbridge.com/ ) with a lot of trails and boardwalk paths around it. Furthermore up the road is Capilano River Hatchery ( http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/sep-pmvs/projects-projets/capilano/tour-visite/tour-visite-eng.htm ) with great displays. Right above the hatchery is Cleveland Dam and Capilano Lake - spectacular scenery ( http://www.greatervancouverparks.com/ClevelandDam01.html )! Also a must-see is Lynn Creek Canyon with its suspension bridge ( http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/Canada/Province_of_British_Columbia/Vancouver-903183/Things_To_Do-Vancouver-Lynn_Canyon-BR-1.html ). If you go to Whistler to ski, the brand new See-to-Sky highway to get there is just spectacular!
In the South-end of Richmond, a southern neighbor of Vancouver, is the village of Steveston with a fisherman's Wharf, retaurants, etc ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steveston,_British_Columbia ). A bit East from there, there's an old fishing village remnants called Finn Slough village ( http://www.finnslough.com/ ) or ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finn_Slough ). Quite spectacular too!
Don't forget the oldest part of downtown Vancouver - the so-called Gastown - eateries and shops ( http://www.seegastown.com/ ). Right above it is the Harbor Center Tower with a restaurant and an observatory at the top ( http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/Canada/Province_of_British_Columbia/Vancouver-903183/Things_To_Do-Vancouver-Vancouver_Lookout_Harbour_Centre-BR-1.html ). If my memory serves me well, you can come back at night with same ride ticket and go up again for free!
Vancouver is on my list as one of the most photogenic cities of the world! Enjoy!

the sky walk is not on the north rim. its on the western end and a good drive from the south rim, closer to vegas and its not all that great, there when it first opened and was nice than but no pics allowed as you cant take anything out on it.some good pics of to the side of it. not worth the effort in getting there in my opinion. North rim more remote but you do get a different view and no crowd.

OOOps my bad. We were driving in all directions while we were there. We also went to the Hoover Dam. Got some good shots.
Can't wait to go back to Arizona. We also traveled parts of Route 66. Very funky!
It's nice that are areas where they get snow. And happy people! I never vacationed anywhere where there were so many happy residents!
I just think Arizona is a visual feast! Every 20 minutes the views change.

Buy Photographing the Southwest: three separate books-

1- Utah
2- Colorado and New Mexico
3- Arizona

Tell you where most of the landmarks worth photographing are, how to get there, best time to get there, best lens to use, best location from which to shoot, some sample images for most locations.

These books are most excellent starting points. I highly recommend them.
