point and shoot camera
George, did you see his proposed budget? Even with my choice of a P&S I went over it.
I was just trying to take all things in consideration, but
perhaps I'm wrong.
I just bought a Kodak Z5010....love it...lots of modes and yet you can still choose to set your own aperature and shutter speed if you wish to. Kadak did have it on special for $179.

Generally speaking, a child that age isn't sure of anything much less a profession, IMHO.
Sorry but we don't agree on this subject.
No harm meant.
My thoughts - Get her a lower end P&S.And a good book on how to take good pictures. If you can get a copy of Kodaks "How to Take Good Pictures" that was published from the'30's to the 6o's it would give her fudementels on composition - posing-etc. A lot of it was for the box camera that was the P&S of the day. The Idiot and Dummie books are good too. If she does take the Photog class think about a film SLR from the mid 60's to 70's.The Minolta SRT series are great they have through the lens match-needle light metering but you have to set everthing. I got one for my collection for $9 on eBay. With a camera like this she would have to learn about all the settings. You can buy a lot of film for the
Canon S90 is one of my favorites
My family and I have been using Panasonic Lumix for years now. Very pleased with the performances of the cameras- easy to use and lots of settings with which to play. Compact, can be inexpensive, durable. Good luck with your choice!

I got my wife an Olympus VG-120. Wide angle, shoots video in 720HD, and is super small and easy to carry in a pocket or purse. $79 at Amazon.com and other places.
You can still find some of those little Sony P&S cameras with the Carl Zeiss lens. What a pleasure to use! I'm fully equipped with another brand in DSLR, but the little Sony is always first at hand so I don't miss the quick shot.

Hi, I use Nikon for my serious photography but started with an Olympus digital ultra zoom and loved it. I still use it a lot. It's very simple to use and I think in your budget. It even has a macro lens. She'll love it. Merry Christmas!!

I need to buy a point and shoot camera for my 13 yr old girl for Xmas. My budget is $150-$250. With hundreds of cameras available in the market, which could you recommend I should buy? She's interested in taking up photography next semester. Is it advisable to give her a transition camera now (even if it is more expensive) or just stick to the point and shoot. Need advise badly. Thank you all!
I have a fourteen year old granddaughter that I just bought the camera she wanted. We looked together at Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc. She looked at me with her big sad eyes and said, Grandpa all I want is a camera that I can point at something and it will take a really good picture of it." "My friend, 123, has a phone that can take really good pictures."
I checked it out and it has and 8 mega pixel camera and a smart phone. That's what I got her and she all ready has it. Uses the camera more than the phone.
I agree with the advice about a Kodak. Get a red or bright colored one. You can get a package that comes with the direct printer that goes from camera to printer, bypassing the computer and editing. They have automatic settings for night shots, bright scenes, action, etc. It is a good stepping stone for a 13 year old.
On sale, I paid less than $150 for camera, printer, paper, print cartriges, camera case, batteries, 1 picture card, and cables.

Gordon,
Not a problem, hell I got into photography early, even underwater by the age of 14. You would have to gauge the interest in the child then decide.
Have a Very Merry Christmas.
George
I agree with all those recommending Kodak. They have some cameras that take some great pictures.
Ditto on another reply to get a powershot of some sort, more features and a teen loves to push those buttons, right? Bought a Canon not too long ago @ WALMART w 6x zoom on sale for less than $200 and have gotten some outstanding landscape and wildlife photos out of it
