Sorry to hear about your shocker. It would ruffle my feathers too but I'd stay a pro, do what I was hired to do and remain very pleasant. If guests asked me about the pics I would tell them to talk to the DJ. Add this item of experience to your checklist before you book your next event. Learning never ends, right?

I would simply go to the person who hired me and state my concerns. And tell that that person in a nice way that if it doesn't stop you and you assistant (if you have on) will leave and the D.J. can become your photographer.

Of course you should only do this if you got paid in advance. And you would be foolish if you didn't.

I do alot of weddings. First work along with the DJs catterers and florist if some one calls me to do a wedding I can refer them to the all of their services I even have a few ministers to call on also. Even tho the DJ was showing picture during the reception that should not effect your job. You are in charge of the posed pictures after the ceromony dont' allow any one there to take pictures except yourself. And their pictures should not even compare to yours. I can't even count how many DJs, florist, and ministers have sent weddings to me. To be a decent wedding photographer you have to a politician as well and have the personality that makes people want to work with you. the main point is as the photographer no one else there photos should even come close to yours. There should be a difference between a Photo and a snapshot. Here is a example do you think I would allow anyone to stand over my shoulder to and get this shot these are the shots you have to claim and own.

You left out the preferred option: enjoy!

Otherwise you are only making yourself miserable.

If you think you count more than the wedding couple (aka your customers) you could handle this explicitly in future contracts.

What would you do if you were hired as the wedding photographer and the DJ has an assistant taking photos of the ceremony and guests at the reception throughout the night-Then shows them on two 42" TV screens next to his speakers. At the ceremony the "shooter" is constantly getting in your way. Our contract stipulates NO other professional photographer is to take photos. DJ says he has it in his contract to do this - and says it 's ONLY photos exclusively for the couple -- Meantime all night your seeing similar photos showing up on two screens. Even the guests are asking if you took that photo earlier .. Would you a) walk, b) talk to groom, 3) make a fuss, ?? .. yes I tried to be nice but I'm ticked OFF to the "s..t" ..GS

I am a very good photographer. I have been shooting weeding since 1965. But I will never compare myself to a politician. I have way more integrity that they have.

I belive we r all in the same boat and have had the same happen to myself till I started to outwit the DJs. What I have done is I use my back up 300s which uses a Sd card I use the eye-Fi card. I have it set to go to my IPad the photo is taken I then use a wirless printer which goes from 4x6 to 8.5x11. They like the photo I print it up and make the sale RIGHT ON THE SPOT.
8 out 10 times when I walk out of a wedding doing this in my pocket comes along $250 to $400 extra bucks for doing what I like to do.
SCrew the DJ for my contract says no other photographer IS ALLOWED TO PHOTO WHILE I AM SHOOTING. I take the photo and as soon as I click it I move on and say Thankyou and undo my pose that I did .

Mooseeyes is right. There is no reason to have a contract if the signing party(s) are not going to abide by the contract and then you allow it.

One of the reasons I no longer shoot weddings. Did for many years. The digital camera is definately hurting the professoinal photographer. Been a photographer for 59
years.

I worked for a wedding photographer as a second shooter and was constantly apologizing for him arguing and yelling at the personnel from the reception hall and also guests at the wedding. In fact he actually had a couple of physical episodes at the weddings. He eventually went out of business.
Once I arrive at the affair I spend some time talking to the DJ and the videographer if one was hired. I find that the DJ basically controls the progress of the event and always puts me in the correct place to get the best possible coverage I can. You need to be secure that your work is why you were hired and concentrate on the job you contracted for. People may not remember you for your work but they will surely remember with bitterness the photographer who disrupted the whole affair.
Just capture your shots and present your showcase. Sell your work, allow your creative juices take control and stand out.

In all likelihood the photos taken by the DJ weren't very good when compared to most professional work. The cost of good equipment is prohibitive to most people. As professionals we have to work around people all the time. As long as you get paid I'd leave it go. Much to do about nothing.

I would do my job I was paid for THIS TIME.
On my next Job I would make sure that I was the only one taking professional photos in my contract and make sure to point that out to my client.
Ask if they arranged others will be taking pictures IE ... the DJ
I would then include showing some of general photos that I had taken of the guests on my own Large screen TV as part of my contract.
You could then add to the showing Photos by ................
where you might pick up extra business.

Use this as a learning experience and a way to add value to my business.

Most of the comments are "suck it up" and move on. I think that's the most business like method. Honey sells, vinegar smells if you get my dift. If the DJ stuff was for the B+G only, you still might get additional orders...but probably not since most prints ordered are from the B+G. The way I see the business going is to boot up the up-front fee and supply a CD or DVD with the photos on it so they can do the slide show thing at home. You can put them on-line for additional sales, but get the working fee up front.
Next time consult the B+G about any other contracts that might affect you.
Weddings are messy. Photography and flowers are always LAST on the list of things the Bride has to worry about. Good luck!

I think the DJ probably sold this as part of his package and the Bride and Groom loved the idea without realizing their conflict in the two contracts.

If the DJ was willing to share his shots w/ the photographer to present the best possible package to the Bride and Groom - great.

Keep it professional, keep passing out the business card, and hope the DJ isn't also selling photos he's taken.
