I am enjoying my first DSLR a Sony A330. I also needed advice and found this website: http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/ through a simple process of answering a few simple questions they narrow the vast array of available cameras to only a very few. Hope this helps you in your search.

Check the Sony Alpha camera's. Canon and Nikon use parts made by Sony.

Sony makes excellent CMOS sensors, which are used in Nikon cameras. Nikon makes excellent lenses, which are not shared with Sony. With Nikon, you get the best of both companies.

I agree with Nik72 in addition you can use just about any lens Nikon ever made the mounting system has not changed in decades

If portraits are to be your main subject and cost is not a huge concern, I would recommend going for a full frame camera with the Canon 5D MKII being the pro's choice and the only way to go IMO.

Add a 'portrait' lens such as Canon's superb EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM. This combination would be unsurpassed in IQ.
For a bit more flexibility perhaps consider Canon's 24-70 2.8 L or the Canon 24-105 f4 L

Good luck

what they said, I am a 30 year Canon veteran.
Only to be slightly non-biased, check nikonian's response as well.

Yep. Agree.

Pentax doesn't make a full frame camera.
They do however make a "645" medium format camera which
is a top of the line portrait camera.

Cost isn't consideration? Go for a Hasselblad with a digital back. Probably a lens in the range 250-300mm, I think, in that system would be good for portraiture.
All the cameras mentioned above are adequate but for professional level portraiture the medium format is best with Hasselblad, in my opinion, being top of the line.

What sort of portraits?

Ultra-sharpness isn't always ideal. I quite like a 90/2.2 Thambar on a Leica M9.

Nor do you need to stick to small formats: 8x10 inch portraiture is quite fun, and (like the Thambar) certainly marks you out from the 'me-too' brigade.

Cheers,

R.

Just a little known fact. All the money in the world, will not make your photos better.

Very true, but unless you are completely useless, you should get better pictures with cameras and lenses that (a) you like using and (b) that are suitable for the job.

Sometimes this costs money.

Isn't the Canon 28-135mm lens their standard kit lens?

I own one and I find it be a very good lens.

It is adequate lens, only fair. Kit lens are the cheapest lens Canon, Nikon offer with the camera which is priced to be attractive. IMHO a potential buyer is well advised to purchase the body only and purchase a better lens with the difference in $$.

You are absolutely correct; my point being to provide information that might, in the future, be important as he gains experience and wonders why the Canon kit lens barrel wobbles. Maybe it is just me, but with use and time I begin to notice the less than ideal properties of things I use, whether it be mechanical, electronic, optical or audio.

I agree. Buy the body only, then add lenses. The original poster didn't say she was on a budget.

Sorry guys, I have to disagree, even with a price no object view at the discount for a body only the kit lens is a deal, if only s a backup, I considered the problem many times, get the kit lens. B ob.
