I may be standing in as the photographer of a toddler to teen beauty pageant on the 23rd. I have never done one, and so could use any advice that you all have.

I will be using a Canon T3i, and have these lens: 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 (IS) & 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 Canon kit lenses, also have a Tamron AF (IF) 28-105mm 1:4-5.6 which I like. Sorry, flash on camera only.

No money in the piggy to run out and buy, so it is what it is. So help me with any advice you can give me.....thanks

Not with what you have.
Your lenses are too slow for indoor available light.
The pop-up flash is only for close range and even then, not flattering.
Sounds like you may be in over your head.
Are ypu being paid or is this a volunteer gig?

When you say "flash on camera only" I hope you are not referring to the 'built-in flash' ! If so, RUN to Target and at least get the $60 hot-shoe flash for Canon! This will help, but not a lot unless you are going to be close!

Is this near your home? I hope it's not down in Natchitoches Parish. They can get plumb mean down there if the pictures of their beauties don't turn out, and Saline Bayou has some deep, dark holes in it. If, on the other hand, you are going down there, post some pictures. I haven't seen that side of my family in years. Don't worry about who's who; they're practically ALL cousins!

I may be able to use a friends Canon flash attachment, if they are not using it that weekend. As far as payment goes, I have no clue tonight. I will be making some calls in the morning to get all that sorted out. To tell you the truth, I would almost do it as a freebie just for the experience, but don't spread that rumor around, you know how the walls talk.....lol

LOL!!
The flash at Target is quite compact, yet does allow the flash head to be tilted up 90deg, so would be a worthwhile investment unless you want to go for the larger units at 3x the costs or more......

Well...for my two cents (and I don't make a living at this..)

I'd say that your current equipment won't cut it IF...the lighting isn't great...if it is...then you have a fighting chance at least.

What's the lighting going to be like? Where will this be held?

If you have at least a sufficient amount of available light you can get through it.

These are all just wild guesses because nobody here knows anything about what you are doing...the situation, lighting, distances, etc....it's all guesses.

Here is my guess at what may work. It's just basically getting near a window and using the window light.

No equipment to buy but it's an option.

Given your inexperience and limited equipment the idea of doing it for free isn't as bad as you might think. View it as on-the-job education and training. This will also help if the photographs don't turn out as good as they expect. The key is to manipulate their expectations. Let them know that you are not experienced, but will do the best you can and that you appreciate this opportunity. And that you are doing it for free. Its not how the pictures turn out, but to what degree they meet their expectations. Good luck and lets us know what happens.

Ok...I must be missing something, since I have shot tons of theater/dance work with a 3.5 lens (my 70-200mm 2.8 lens is still on my wish list and not in my hands) and have gotten some good and some exceptional photos. So why are we saying that Canjun's equipment won't cut it?

Now with that said, are you shooting them on the stage and you in the back or seperate from others? What is the purpose of the photos? Can you get in touch with the usual photographer and see what they recommend?

Get that flash ASAP, go to the auditorium, banquet hall, whatever and do some practice shots using their lighting. If that cant be done go as early as possible before the event starts and practice, practice, practice, practice.
Before hand make a check list of the things you must do. Also talk to your friend and/or the pagent manager to find out just what kinds of photos they expect you to take. I would do this today if possible. You need all the lead time you can get.

Hey Cajon....I'd be glad to loan you an external flash. You can send it back to me when you're done. PM me if you are interested.

Wow! Thanks Jim for the offer, you are a very trusting sole. I am pretty sure I can utilize my friend's flashes, and she has Canon equipment. Besides all that I would be afraid that I would bump or worse yet break yours, and I sure don't want that to happen. Thank you so much for the offer though. I hope to know more about it all later today or maybe tomorrow.

Well as it turned out, they have already gotten another photographer for the beauty pageant. Thanks for all the advice and concerns, I do appreciate it.

Cajon,
Go to the shoot and see how the photographer is handeling it. You can learn alot. Take your camera and see what it can do under the circumstances. You may be surprised what you and the camers can do.
