Navy Veterans: USAA allows you to buy top of the line insurance as high value floater on your homeowners policy as long as you are not commercial.

Prices are moderate and my insurance is for retail value. D800E, IR converted D800, D4, 600mm f/4 etc. Also my Hassy. They asked if I was serious about insuring this much equipment and confirmed that I was not a professional. Insurance issued in less than 24 hours.

I have had only one claim in 40 years. For 10x50 Leica binoculars that I bought locally at a greatly reduced rate. No questions about pay out.

Food for thought!

Beautiful photo. On the subject of insurance I have a personal articles floater that is very inexpensive. The cost is less than $100 for over $4,000 of equipment and I recommend it to everyone.

Very sorry to hear of your loss - please accept my sincere condolences - at least the insurance will help to soften the blow.

I lost ONLY a lens cap from my Sigma 150-500 as I bent over to shoot some ducks in a wildlife sanctuary and I felt like I had lost a limb.Had the lens only a week and the replacement cost 42.50GBP.

Hope you get sorted soon - good luck!!

I'm curious why the lack of an AA filter in the D7100 doesn't seem to worry you about moire, but the D800E does?

And my tongue-in-cheek comment is that I'm surprised no one has chimed in yet to say "...if only you would have invested in a better tripod...". Seriously, though, I'm sorry to hear about your equipment, that is a real bummer.

That is heart breaking even for a Canon person. :-) I'm glad though that at least you had removed the media and still had all your pictures from that morning. Not a total loss, but close to it. Cheers.

This was all I was left with.
My souvenier trophy.....the snapped off 500mm lens collar mounting base.

Sure looks naked and injured,....no band aid fix here.

Maybe I'll have it bronzed and mounted,...not on a tripod though,..been there, done that

Marty, small consolation, but both of those images are superb and worth more than the cost of the gear.

Very sorry to hear that, it is a photographer's night-mare! It had happened to my old friend of our photo club in NY four years ago, He(past away a year later) dropped his D2x with the Signa 50-500mm lens in the parking lot late night after a long day outing. The lens mounting completely broken to pieces, including the contact cable and everything around, but the D2x was fine with out a dent, may be the lens absorbed all the forces. After that He gave me the remaining of the lens (I like collecting lens for my our project-take the lens apart to do something else),and sold the D2x and brought a D300s. I checked the lens, it could be repair, so I sent it to a local camera shop to check it out, the guy said he can repair it for around $300. I agreed, after 4 weeks the lens came home like new. Now I use it on My D200. That guy is amazing!

Well to put things in perspective my friend...it could have been you off the side of that ledge. So, while it hurts to lose the camera...that can and will be replaced ;-)

Sorry for your loss but your D300 died doing what it did best!

You were lucky. I left my Nikon D200 on my back deck table undercover and forgot it. Some rain got on it and the electronics quite working. Sent it to Nikon and they just said sorry, can't be fixed. The moral is to learn from our experiences.

I visited Lubec and want to return but will not leave my D800e unattended when I do. FYI: never a single incident of moire in any image.

So as mentioned above "Shift Happens."

FYI: My D800e while on a tripod tipped over in my office. I sent it to Nikon and they fixed it. So tell Nikon to go to the ocean and get your D300 and lens for repair. Just trying to add some humor to your pain. Maybe all will turn out when you go to the D800e as MT and I suggest. You will say thank you.

Is that a Fuji camera in your pic you are using?
