would like #1 better without the post. #2 would have looked better showing the entire body JMO

Since you have asked me so nicely for my opinion via private message, here is what I think about these 2 pictures:
No.1 - Since it is a peek-a-boo, the eyes should be the most important objects, ie., they should be very prominent.
The bright wooden plank is too bright, further taking attention away from the eyes.
The image is lacking black and grey.
The background needs to get de-noised.
I like, though, the originality (the peek-a-boo); I would suggest to go back and try it again to get the eyes more pronounced.
No.2 - The right parts of the horse's neck and of the ears are over-exposed, 'burned', hence missing detail. A polarizing filter or graduated neutral density filter should prevent that.
Also, the whole image is too bright, needing more black and grey.
The background needs to get de-noised.
Again, the eye must be crispy sharp.
I like the cuddlines in it, it is a well-composed, gentle image.
I tried to render all of the above in Photoshop CS5, as per the images below.
