Maybe too late but I am new at this. I filled the flash, darkened the yellows, cropped the right side, darkened the buttons on his shirt and then brightened the picture to get colors based on the poinsetta. Finally I selected just the two of them and brightened them a little more to move them forward from the background.
lightchime: what a great recovery. Your improvement has saved the day and the crop has taken out all the extraneous background.
Gr8 work lightchime,
Think I like your work the best. The deer balances the picture out.
You've got plenty to choose from.

I took this photo on Christmas Eve of my sister and brother-in-law. They hosted a lovely dinner for our family and this is the only photo I took of them -- ugh! Is there anyone who can help me get rid of the flash reflection in the window? I would so appreciate it so I can share with everyone. Thank you!
This is my offering to the thread :)
Hey katymom,
I think there are several things that we all have struggled with in this picture:
1. It's too dark.
2. A lot of competition between the desired focus (The people) and other elements (the reindeer to the left, flash, window reflections, etc).
3. Not enough interesting stuff to gently move the eye around the picture.
With all this in mind, we have to narrow the scope of the picture by cropping, which many folks did; brighten up the picture and recolorize it a bit; and deal with the flash on the window behind them without leaving complete black mark ups or otherwise distracting fixes.
Phew, that was long, but I hope it helps. Check out my version that at least partially addresses these concerns.
The whole picture was driving me nuts..Not my best edit job..Just for fun.
