I recently purchased a Canon T3i (love it!) and want to know what are some of the good editing software for a MAC. I have read a little on the Adobe Elements 10, but would like to hear from anyone if there are others out there which have proven to be just as good. Thanks :)

I use Adobe Lightroom 3 on Mac laptop to edit 95% of my photos and also use it to catalog them too. Mac also makes Aperture editing software which a lot people use too. Arnold

buy elements 10 from amazon as a download for $49.95. it's awesome. i have been a photoshop user for 17 years....i just loaded elements tonite and it's just like photoshop in most ways. the commands and shortcuts are the same. just some over advanced stuff left out.

also check the thread for the free photoshop webinar..it will include the basics for elements.

I have a Canon T2i and have been using Apple"s Aperture 3 program for a couple of years. It is relatively easy to learn and use and does everything I want it to do. I also use some " NIk " plug-in's that work along with Aperture. You can download a free trial of Aperture from the Apple web site. Nik also provides free trial software for their products.

The i-photo and Aperture 3 are excellent programs for the mac. Have used both for many years and find them easy to use. Have played with lightroom, elements & CS5 and find them to be less user friendly. You may have the i-photo on your mac all ready. i-photo 11 is the latest version which I would recommend up grading to.

If you choose to get the Photo Shop, I would suggest ordering it from Adobe, NOT the Apple store. I have heard there are some operational problems with the PS from Apple, and not so when it is purchased from Adobe. I purchased mine from the Apple store and my computer keyboard freezes every time I use PS. Of course, both Apple and Adobe say it is caused by the other one.

Hi Merrymary, i photo is a great place to start. What Mac do you have ? If you are just staring and you are shooting jpeg all should be fine. However, if you are shooting raw and you want to use Aperture 3 computer power could be come an issue. Have a ton of fun :)

I have iphoto now but I find it very limiting by itself. Didn't realize there was an upgrade out there. I have been on this site now for less than a week and I am gaining sooooo much information!!

Don't forget Picasa (free). There's a version of GIMP for the Mac, though that's heavy duty stuff, roughly equivalent to Photoshop. Photoshop Elements used to have the reputation of being 80 percent of Photoshop for 20 percent of the price. Unless it has changed, one thing Photoshop Elements CAN'T do is save an image in CMYK format, which is necessary when working with many commercial printers. You could get Elements and GIMP, and just use GIMP to open an image you've worked on in Elements and saved in RGB, and change the mode to CMYK and save again. If you found this necessary, you should save a TIFF from Elements, open it in GIMP, change the mode, and then save as a JPEG, if JPEG is what you want to end up with.

In short: Lots of possible solutions ranging from the simple to the complex, and from free to quite pricey.

I use Picasa primarily for file management and forwarding files. I do most of my editing in Elements, and occasionly use Gimp. They all have versions for Mac. Picasa and Gimp are free programs. Picasa, will give you access to Picnik, which is on line. Picasa, allows you to open a picture in Elements, or other editing programs by right clicking an image. If you are starting out, it doesn't make sense to spend money , while there is a lot of free programs available. If I wre going to buy it would be Elements. I have used Photoshop and found it expensive, difficult to use, and more than I needed.
