A good puzzle, but initially I found the use of the + sign a bit misleading. The + sign already has a defined meaning, so it should have been something undefined like * or ~.

I think there are very nearly 30,000 "Hogs" now and I believe the reference to the 2% is to the Mensa Society qualifications (the upper 2 percentile in standardized IQ tests).
Normally you would think that only about 600 "Hogs" (out of 30,000) would typically qualify for that test but I would argue that some of the same qualities that drew members to the hobby/profession of photography (desire to be creative, fascination with the technical aspects of photograp, etc.) make the Hog membership disproportionally representative of the higher IQ's in the general population.
I'd hazard a guess that at least 25% of Hogs fall within that 2 percentile range.
