good answer
Sketch paper and watercolors might provide a suitable substitute. Might not cry so loud if they were lost or stolen. ;)

I feel your pain. Want to take but want to have fun and not worry about your equipment. A quandary for sure. Guess you could leave your camera at the hotel when you can't have it in hand. Good advice I have read is to carry your equipment in a ratty looking bag so it is not an appealing looking target to a would be thief. Also have read to use a little black electrical tape over the Nikon (or whatever) and a generic camera strap so it will not look expensive.

I never take a camera to a swimming environment unless I plan to take the camera in with me or have someone to keep an eye on it.

Perhaps your advice relative to travelling with expensive equipment should apply not only to visitors in Cuba but also our own backyard: New York city, Chicago, Dallas, etc., etc. We seem to forget or ignore our problems. I have expeienced them all.
Cheers

Good point. Caution is required everywhere, but when we venture into unknown territory, we have to be even more cautious because we don't know the area and its customs. In some parts of the world, even the police can't be trusted. A friend has been traveling in another country, and giving "tips" to the police is standard practice.
Went to Cuba a few years ago. Very safe but common sense must prevail. The old bag is a good idea. You'll definitely want your camera for the old cars and buildings. If you get a chance to go to the Tropicana (especially in Havana), do it!!! The colours and motion are great.

I can't imagine an area or country where its customs say it is OK to steal; and as far as "tips" to the police... hummm, you will not have to look too far...
