It is hard to beat the Sony RX-100. has manual everything, f/1.8 Carl Zeus lens, 20 MP and a 1 inch sensor. I love mine and hardly carry the SLR anymore. A bit pricy at $700.00 US, but worth every penny.

The RX-100 has many built in effects that are usually done in Post processing. The 1 feature I am in love with is the in camera HDR. It works wonderfully and there is a setting for low light (almost no light) where the camera will take 6 photos and combine them into one. It is just an amazing camera.

Ditto!!! It's an amzing pocket camera but it is a bit pricey/ (~$650). The thing is, it gives you total control (including RAW) and the sensor is about as big as it gets for it's size (20 MP).

Wow great replies thank you. I really dont want to spend alot. I would rather put the money into glass for my DSLR. Would definately be interested in RAW capabilities. I do like to shoot manual so something that is easy to control. One thing I dont like about the s60 is it isnt easy to change settings quickly and on the fly while shooting because everything is off the touch screen. I do understand that everything is a trade off and you get what you pay for.

If you want RAW, Sony RX100 is about the only pocket camera that offers that capability. I have one and love it for its qualities as well as for the fact that I can take it anywhere with me. In order to streamline the camera and make it truly portable, it has eliminated the GPS and viewfinder, which I don't particularly need, and in exchange it has the RAW capability and a very large sensor for its size. If the price is not a deterrent, I would recommend it

The one thing I added to mine was the Richard Franiec grip. I have kind of big hands & it makes the camera easier to hold.

I have been using Panasonic Lumix TZ 30 and the previous model. Leica lens, and a great little camera. Easy to carry around, and can be programmed if you want more control. Doesn't take RAW - only drawback I have found.

One series of pictures entered into competition were judged to be technically very good!!!

I can highly recommend.

Check this out, the olympus SZ-31MR 16 mp wide angle lense, 24x optical zoom, 7 different shooting modes including Scene, 4.5" long, 2.75"high and 1.75" thick, I have the previous model, The SZ -30MR and love it, It is definately a pocket camera, And plenty of Ooomph.
Steves Digicams Bottom line reviw on the SZ-30MR Reads.
Bottom Line - The Olympus SZ-30MR is a feature rich, compact super-zoom camera that is packed with appealing features. The camera boasts a impressive zoom lens, great image quality, speedy shooting performance, full HD video, and loads of creative exposure options. We would have loved to see a bit more manual control, however the average consumer will be quite happy with the options available. While no camera is perfect, the SZ-30MR's strong points greatly out weigh the small annoyances or issues we found while using this powerful little camera. With an average retail price of $319 - $399 US, the SZ-30MR isn't the cheapest camera on the block. But, with the quality, options, and specifications it offers, we feel that it's worth the investment if you are looking for an easy to use digital camera with a powerful zoom range.

I am interested in opinions on a good small "pocket" camera. I have a Nikon DSLR and don't always want to carry it around all the time. I would like to have something to carry with me all the time. I have thought about moving to an iphone but I am a blackberry user and will probably go down with the ship. I have a coolpix s60and I am not crazy about it. Love to hear suggestions
Thanks

If you're looking for something truly pocketable i.e. shirt pocket and not too expensive, can I put a word in for the Fuji F200exr. I've had mine for a couple of years and it goes everywhere with me and gives excellent results, it has never let me down[ amazing really after some of the situations it's been in!]
It's probably been superseded now but I've no reason to upgrade.

The good news is - there are lots of good choices. The bad news is - there are lots of good choices. Unless you have specific requirements, you can't go wrong with an upper end name brand P&S. As you narrow your choices, check with www.snapsort.com.

I like the Canon s95, carry it many times but not daily.......you answered your own question in a sense, the iPhone as a camera. I use my iPhone 4s most often for shooting photos when I'm on the road commuting or places where it's not practical to even use a pocket camera. Can't beat it for those photo ops you least expect.

How small? Canon g series can't be beat in my opinion, need a large pocket though, Bob.

I love my little Canon Elph. Carry it everywhere, even when I am toting my SLR. The photo attached is just one example of many that I took on the run.

Find it on eBay
Sony DSC-H90 - High Zoom Point and Shoot. 3rd Sony Hi Zoom P&S. As they keep making them better, I will keep buying. No other in its class can match it.
I love it because:
Carry it in my pocket anywhere
Fast on
16X optical, up to 115X digital (I do carry a descrete monopod with me)
100 pix burst mode
works well in most all settings - can't remember when I last used the flash
Season tix to the Phillies and Eagles - incredible pix there with the burst as well as incredible pix at a multitude of concerts.
Pix I discretely took at my son's wedding in the front row with the camera on my knee put the pro to shame (he was bad to begin with but the burst, no flash and quiet action allowed a lot of fun stuff)
I could go on, but enough is enough

Sony RX100 - The best pocket camera and the best camera I've ever had.

Panasonic LX7 - Less money, a little bulkier and also amazing. My wife loves her's.

Sony HX9V - Less money, smaller than the LX7 and about the same size at the RX100. Terrific camera. I still enjoy using it's predecessor, the HX9V.

Check out the Canon A-1400. Has a viefinder and uses AA batteries. Also has a "srealth mode" for when you want to shoot quietly. I am a Nikon user but carry my little Canon with me everywhere.
