I am curious to know what your lens of choice is for taking portraits. Do you always use the same lens? Do you use filters while shooting indoors? I'm new here and as you may be able to tell from my questions I'm a newbie to the world of photography. I'll be put out to pasture in a few years and have always wanted to learn to how to use my camera but have never taken the time. I'm hoping to gather some equipment and use photography to keep me occupied and out of trouble once I retire. :-D

My 100mm macro works great for single, or close couple. More than 2 people, my 24-70mm f2.8

I love my Nikon 50mm 1.8F lens. It cost me 100 bucks and is razer sharp and great with low light. Outside I always use some sort of filter, mostly for protection. Indoors in a controlled environment (My dogs locked up) I take the filters off so I get the best picture possible.

I love my canon 50mm f1.8 lens for portraits.....beautiful bokeh.....but if more than one person I use my tamron 28 - 75mm f2.8 and sometimes my canon 70 - 200mm f4 especially if I'm outdoors and want to stay a bit away from the subject who may feel uncomfortable when the camera is right on top of them. But for straight up beautiful portraits of one person the 50mm prime lens is best.

My all time to to Portrait lens is a $19.95 1970 135mm f2.8 Spiritone preset (widapeda preset lens). It has background blur (bokeh) that is great. Used it on my Minolatas back when and got a Nikon T mount for my Digital cameras. I would recomend it to anyone that has Kit lenses and not much money
that would like a great Portrait lens now. I picked one up on Ebay for a friend for Christmas $21.21. I also use a Tamaron 35-105 F/2.8. Dave

Hi,

This is the ideal lens length range Scot Kelby recommends, so I use it also from about 8 ft. f11 is usually good although depending on the background you may wish to use your minimum f-stop to fuzz it.

I use a bounce flash with a diffuser...it really helps. I let the camera work out the exposure...shoot an "A".

Regards,
Larry Leach

Most everyday portraits areEither my 85mm 1.2L
135mm f2.0 or
70-200mm f2.8L II

For most client related, I had to pull big guns and say
Red Pro Prime 100mm T1.8 is the best portrait lens I have ever used. It's the first lens I go for if I'm using my ONE. Sometimes if I need more room, I use the Red Pro Prime 35mm T1.8

For the budget minded, I recommend the prime Canon 85mm f/1.8. This lens is super sharp and I've never taken a bad portrait with it. Of course, there is always a first time. :-)
