Thank for all of your invaluable help. I do plan on purchasing either the Apple or LaCie.
Sorry if my comment earlier was offensive. I will be much more careful in the future.

I have had good results from Samsung USB drives on my Windows notebook. Only about $50 but don't run the set up disc as it will contain spyware. Just plug it in and you should have the drivers unless Apple wants you to buy a Mac specific drive for $100-$150

I assume you have a network! If yes, dead easy too remedy. Connect you mac book pro to your net work then share a rom drive on another p.c. Or if your are unable to share the Rom drive create a file and set up share a Hard drive it is dead easy to do. This is simple to set up. Look on you-tube or ask a 10 year old. (LOLOL) cost is Z-E-R-O

Just received a MacBook Pro. What is your suggestions for an external CD drive? I need to move photos from CDs to an external hard drive using the Mac. My Dell's motherboard bit the dust so I must purchase one hoping it doesn't cost the other "arm & a leg". Thanks in advance.
By the way, the learning curve has not been too bad.

I got my new iMac a few weeks ago. I bought my external from Amazon. Copied and pasted below:

Aluminum External USB DVD+RW,-RW Super Drive for Apple--MacBook Air, Pro, iMac

I paid $49 and it works great. In addition, the aluminum trim makes it look like it was made for my iMac. The drive is available from other merchants as well.

As a side comment, some Mac user forums express irritation about the removal of the drive from the new models. I think it is very wise and oriented towards the consumer's interests by having an inexpensive part not being integral part of a very expensive machine. Those moving parts are the most likely to give up first, and I would hate to have to take my iMac to the shop instead of simply replacing and plugging a new drive to the USB3 port.

Justwould like to add that I had a minute of confusion trying to eject the disc by pushing the external drive's button. When the Drive's icon shows on the Mac's desktop, I right-click on it and on the "eject" option. I am a new convert to Mac and I assume that you are as you mention Dell. I still am learning.

My 15 inch macbook pro has a dvd drive, Check for a slot on the right side of the case. If there isn't one you can buy an apple dvd drive for it for about 80 bucks.

I bought the apple cd drive. But there are plenty of drives out there that do the same thing..

I see $50 and '$100 and then 80 bucks. How come Zero or no bucks is not getting the big Appel of approval?

Thank you for looking into this. I will certainly check out the Apple USB 3.0 SuperDrive, but as much as this new computer has cost, I may be looking at the lesser of two weevils.[/quote]

I have the Apple SuperDrive too and it works well. Only criticism I have is that it does not have an 'eject' button so you have to be sure to eject before you unplug. But that's a minor gripe.

Any removable drive on a Mac should be ejected using Finder or another software command before it is unplugged; the same is true for a disk in an internal drive. Otherwise, you will get repeating pop-up notices that the drive or disk was not properly ejected. If this happens, reinsert the drive or disk, go to Finder and properly eject it. After successful software ejection, it may be physically disconnected. Ejecting a disk from an internal disk may also trigger physical ejection, but not always.

I just purchased a Macbook pro and it contains a DVD Superdrive. According to the web this should read CD's. I was not aware that you could purchase a Macbook pro without a drive. Are you sure you don't have one?

If you visit the Mac Genius bar you will see that in most instances the Mac techs use a Lacie Rugged external hard drives when they are doing tech work on the counter at the genius bar.
I purchased a Lacie external DVD drive because the Mac option had far slower write speeds.
If money was not an object and I was in the market I would certainly give a SSD external hard drive a look, and of course take a look at Thunderbolt because of the fast data transfer rate
