Question about the Canon EOS Rebel xsi
if you click on the "menu," and click again on the 2nd. symbol to the right, you will see several selections, one of which is monochrome. This setting will get you black and white.
I would suggest for better results, take all of your images in raw, and use photo editing software to convert the image to black and white. This way you can control the contrast in the various color channels, and end up worth better black and whites that are not so washed out. You will also have the color version, and you can decide which version you like best.
Keep in mind, when shooting in raw, you will need to edit each picture, however, your end results will be better, and you will find a raw image can be adjusted better than one taken as a jpg.
If you go to the Canon web site, you may be able to find an instruction book for this camera you can download on line in pdf format, and view on screen from your home computer.
I have this camera also, you can go to canon.com and get the on line manal. Or go to youtube.com theres lots of info. The tech stuff I can't help you with, I'm still trying to turn it on.
Patti Mc,
I already posted a link to Canon's website for the XSi for downloading the manual. I also posted specific pages in the manual for B&W settings. Some people have suggested you should take your photos in color and then make them B&W in post processing. No argument there...but to me it depends on what you're shooting. If it's something that is moving or is a one-time occurrence, I agree with that. But for your barns and churches and other objects that WON'T be moving, take them in B&W, then switch to color and see which you prefer. As I said earlier, your XSi B&W setting can be fine-tuned for all kinds of contrasts and tonations, so get familiar with what your camera can already do for you.
I have that camera also but mine came with the everything including hard cover books and videos....I would rather do than read unless I have to...lol
But it seems no matter how beautiful the snow looks there really isn't any color in it....I usually shoot in color and then take it out on the computer...Guess I will try doing it from the start, I am learning so much here..
The good thing is I can take some in black and white and in color because they are free......lol
I agree with Susie Q and Micheal G. Shoot in color. You can always turn off the color channels to make B&W but if the information was not there to begin with....
Keep the camera at most of it's default settings and change things in post.
I have 3 of these cameras, I picked up a "Field Guide" manual for $12 online, it was great, covered every aspect of the camera, 430 flash and lenses. Like a manual on steroids! great investment $12.
I found the manual lacking and picked up this book which is very helpful Canon Rebel XSi/450D Guide to Digital SLR Photography by David D. Busch. It goes into great detail about the camera and what it can do.
I bought the same camera about a year ago. I contacted Robertscameras.com in Indy. about a manual for it. They had a used one from canon that I bought I think for about 5.00 bucks, but the recommend a book by Kathrine Lowry by Wiley publishing that I bought also. I hardly use the Canon manual, but use the other one daily. Well written easy to under stand and concise. She explains how and why things are done.
shoot in color and then convert to B&W in computer. When you set your camera to B&W you throw away a lot of detail.
I have two Xsi cameras. Email me and I'll send you an electronic copy. I have also, attached a copy to this HOG post. Smile
