At tthe riskof getting boring here are two of Mr. Seliger's pictures showing his use of dark-against-lit to greater degree than his usual. I find it hard to imagine that this was achieved with lighting only and not PP.

People used to get it "right" in the camera before digital.
The good pros still do it that way.
This is actually pretty easy to do w/o any post processing.

You are right about the possibility of doing it without PP, but before digital Ansell Adams did it in his dark room, and he used the chiaroscuro approach in either in his studio or by skill use of filters in many of his pictures.

Well...actually, copying someone else when starting out is a great way to learn. As you get better, you will develop your own style.

One of the best groups to copy is the old masters - study the paintings and try to copy their lighting.

Copy lighting from tutorials or books to learn the basics. Just "being your own creation" without an understanding of the basics is just flailing around. Once you understand the principles of basic lighting and get an idea of what makes pleasing light ratios and understand what short/broad/split lighting is and why you would use which one, THEN deviate from the "rules" but now you know what you are deviating from and why.

As I clearly stated before, do YOUR own thing and do not listen to the people with a closed mindset. Why do you think the photographer you mentioned was so great for so many years? Was he like everyone else? I doubt it.

A photographer should NEVER have a closed mindset, and continuously be in learning mode. The learning gets more interesting as you get more proficient. Sure, you can have a few dozen stock setups which deliver every time, but the essence is to keep pushing in whatever way or direction that continues to pique your interest your photographic world.

You are 100% correct once you understand the basics and what kind of light/lighting does what. But LEARNING to light is not just doing your own thing - all that does is reinforce bad habits and ignorance.

Couldn't that area have been darker and he just burned in more to enhance it. Seriously it is not that difficult.

As usual, Listen to the Captain!!! As most posters here have seemed to react, my first thought on the original post is, "okay, how can I get that effect with the lighting I have available?", and it immediately had me thinking about locations to shoot such a shot, etc.
For me, in music and in photography, copying - or even better, "emulating" - the styles of artists whose work I admire has always been my best learning experience.

Our failures are what makes us great. Babe Ruth struck out about 3,000 times and he was one of the greatest players of all times. As I clearly stated before do your own thing, failures and all, get creative and do not listen to them. You think Babe Ruth used a "hit meter" to stike a baseball? I don't think so..........

OK, I give up. Yep, just go do your own thing. Of course you still have no idea WHAT you are doing and you will think your failures are successes since you have no baseline to judge from, but sure, forget studying the old masters, forget trying to emulate good work and learn from it.

Don't you DARE look at good work at try to figure out how it was done - what a waste of time! Flailing around in ignorance is just the ticket.

Babe ruth struck out 300O times. So what? ANY good athlete has coaches and those coaches and that athlete KNOW what good form is. They know the basics and know them well. Not one of them is dumb enough to be "doing his own thing."

I am going to urge all my competitors to follow dfchidf7's advice, I think it will be perfect for them.

Those who don't want to learn from the old masters will live out their photography careers wishing they could produce quality work like the old masters. They will spend thousands of dollars on equipment and still wish their portraits were as good. Learn all you can and never stop learning. And when someone compliments you and desires to be as good as you, teach them, for eventually, you will be the old master others desire to be.

Because you do bother. For everyone out there wearing dark glasses with their ipod ear buds in, there are twice as many who want to learn. That's why you bother, else you wouldn't be on here.

Well said Robert in total agreement. As in any trade you have to complete your apprenticeship. Where you learn your trade from someone who has years of experience. Photography isn't just about pressing the shutter button. how many members would the Hog have if we were still using film. Since digital came in it has been all to easy to think that we don't need to bother with looking at what the Old Masters had done and when I say Old Masters I also mean Old Masters of Photography. I served my apprenticeship With a three year degree course in University and a two year course at college Doing Photo Journalism. I have been on a learning curve ever since. I am at present Trying out street photography utilizing my Compact camera with my Canon Speedlight 430EX as the slave. I have had some really good results. I have also in the last few years been getting into Landscape and now sell what I take. I have posted several on the Hog with with Favorable remarks. So always learning it never stops.
