Suggestion: don't buy DX lenses. You will buy a much better lens if you get the 50mm f1.8 G for 215 or the 50mm f1.8 D for 130. Or the 35mm f2 for 360.
These lenses are better glass and will hold their value and should you decide to move to full frame in the future you have already have lens to start with.

If you have a camera with a focusing motor I would suggest the 60mm Macro lens. You are looking for a Macro Lens?? They run about $300 in mint used condition on ebay. You can get 1:1 true macro with the 60mm. If you want to really do macro I would suggest a Macro lens in the 100mm range
Visit the Macro Page on this forum for good solid advice on macro lens and all that goes with the how too: to do macro photography http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html

Also, I thought the nikor 40mm was 1:1? I would like the 60 or 100 but like many, funds are short

If I spoke too soon, sorry. I figured DX since Nikon only makes a 40 in DX. What will you be using the lens for? I'm sticking with buy FX lens. The Hog is filled with posts about taking a beating when they upgraded formats and you will (probably) do so some time in the future. Is there a FX lens that will accomplish your needs?

I'll agree with previous posts it's a better long term investment to go with an FX lens. For macro and close-up, my choice would be something in the 105mm range, as it allows a little more distance between lens and subject. This gives you more room for lighting and keeps your camera from casting a shadow on your subject. A 40mm will put your lens right on top of your subject, with no "breathing" room.

yeah, thats what I was afraid of Danilo....I am definitly interested in macro shots, and my next question was in regards to distance from subject. Ok so with an FX lens i could get that now and use it with my D3100 and it would transition with me as I upgrade....is that correct? Thank you all for the insight.

Correct. I didn't think about macro I was so intent on you not making a mistake buying DX lenses.
The experts in macro can tell you what lens to buy- I never got into it. Of course you could post a question on that point if you choose...
Good luck.

$300 used Nikon 60mm, $490 brand new Tokina 100mm witch is as good or better than the nikon 105mm. As Nikonian72 suggested check out the macro forum if you want solid advice

I use the 40mm macro lens all the time....very nice lens for the price and can be used in many different ways. If you like I can post a shot and see for yourself what it can do.

This picture was taken with this lens, however like others have said if you want to shoot macro go for the 60mm or beter yet the 105mm.

You would probably be better off with the Nikon 105mm Macro lens.
With a 40mm, you have to get in fairly close to the subject, and if its wildlife you are after shooting, they will be off before you get close enough.
If you are using a DX body, you will benefit from the FX lens crop factor of 1.5, this will effectively give you a focal length of approximately 157mm.

The censor determines the crop factor....not the lens on a DX body.
