24-70mm f2.8 Very sharp, and a very useful range. A bit heavy - especially on a 1D body

Trevor Dennis,

I have heard/read wonderful things about the f2.8, all the pros I read say it is a "must have". Been quite a bit discussed with the newer model coming out with the IS and all.

I have that range covered alibet in a f4, maybe some day I will be in a position to upgrade to the fine f2.8 maybe the folks who have em will want to upgrade and the price will plummet?

I doubt it as it is such a good lens, thanks for posting!

I have to say the fastest and sharpest of all my glass is the 300mm f2.8L IS USM. It all depends on what I'm shooting. The 70-200 and 24-70 are also fantastic.

RTFM,

Ah the big primes, the lens some us dream about. I have the 17-40 f4 non IS & 70-200 f.8 non IS and now the 24-105 f4 IS that came as kit with the newly aquired 6D. As soon as I get over the expense of the 6D / 24-105 I have plans someday to get a big prime. I have read and seen the results of some that have those guys and wow it makes you want one so. In time, In time someday maybe a 400 f4?

EFS 17-55 2.8 for a walk-around lens. It is as sharp as my 'L' glass and I am having a ball with it. You will pay through the nose for it, but worth every penny. Agree with others..... Get a hood for it. B&H has one much less than Canon's original equipment, and just as good.

Al FR-153,

I have hear/read and seen results from that lens that are spectacular. It must be one of Canons most expensive non L glass Lens. I also think or have read wonderfull things about the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 usm.

Although I would have considered both of those as I built my collection I made a promise to myself not to buy a lens that would only fit a crop sensor as I had plans all along to get a FF and wanted my lens investment to work on my FF.

Well I finely got my FF now I have to get out there and put all my glass to the test!

Thanks for posting.

My EFS 55-250 has given me tons of great shots in a range of shooting conditions. it's a cheapo kit lens but sharp and very dependable over the zoom range.

OK this question is limited ,at least from my perspective on EF and EF-S mount cause I shoot Canon bodies.

What is your favortie lens and why?

ASR666,

There is something to be said for having the range on the camera when you want/need it.

bull drink water,

Good answer, I think that is what draws some people to the dslr concept, you can change the lens and do something different!

My favorite lens is what I am using at the time I am shooting. If I am doing wildlife -500 mm, Macro 105 macro etc

mborn,

Well a quick look at your web site and wow you do some really fine work.

I agree that having the "right" lens for the job can be more rewarding. I will spend some time on your site to enjoy your work, Thanks for posting!

Depends on where I am,
outdoors Sigma 17-70
indoors with some room 50mm 1.8
indoors tighter areas 40mm 2.8 pancake

I have used the Sigma indoors, heavy , 50mm and 40mm outdoors nice but sometimes I'd rather have more options, depends on what I feel like carting and where I'm going, Bob.

Curtis, how do you like the 6D? I've got the 60D with 70-200 f/4L and a Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX. I'm wondering if I should upgrade, cause dp review didn't give it the WOW factor as a considerable upgrade from the 60D. I'm liking the fact that the 6d is a smaller ff thatt petite hands can handle. I hate all the bulky weight but I want better focusing ability.

redpepper,

I like it a lot. However I have only had it weeks not months so I would be hesitent to comment beyond liking it and not haveing any trouble focusing. I usually use the center point which is noted as being very good in low light conditions.

There was quite a buzz in the online press about the body only have a one cross type and being a considerable downgrade in reguard to the focusing system. Lately I have seen much better reviews online after people used the camera and were not just comparing the spec sheet. Real life use can be different than what is perceved by reading a spec sheet. I enjoy mine and will get better as I lean to use it, I have been very happy with the results so far I got some supurb, IMO shots of the Grandbabies!

I am not familure with your Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX, so I looked it up to see if it would mount on the 6D. There was this note on Amazon;
Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

I love it!

I think the type of shooting/photos you shoot plays a huge roll in what lens becomes the fav. I tend to shoot wildlife from a canoe and find the 300 f4L to be my fav. Being a prime lens I don't have to worry about adjustments as the current or wind push me in and out of frame. Lighter then the 70-200 2.8 that I thought I had to have (not sorry). I keep a 1.4x with me as well a Tamron 10-24 just incase the landscape shot begs to be taken. At first witht he 300 I found I was limited to what I could and could'nt snap, but got used to that right away. I thought I wanted a L macro lens but find a butterfly really doesn't sit long enough to set up a shot, and I prefer to grab them with the 300 from distance. Not the same, but it does the job for now.

bobmcculloch,

you got a good bunch there, I have the 50mm 1.8 and the 40mm 2.8 as well. I plan to try them out on a FF to see if they give me a different experence.
I appreciate the flexablilty that the zoom lens provide and at the cost of the extra weight when compared to the other lenses you mentioned.

Sorry, meant to reply to Curtis Lowe's post and can't seem to go back! I have been looking at buying an 85mm, but didn't know if I should spend the $$$ on the L series. I believe in spending the dough on the best glass if you can, but your comment makes me wonder if I'm wasting my money! The L is a 1.2 vs the 1.8. Do you get good quality in low light? Maybe I need to rent and compare before I buy...

As you know, I have many of the same lenses you have. However, I really like the prime 85mm f/1.8. It's no surprise that the 70-200 f/2.8 is for many their most favorite lens, but for absolute sharpness, I think the 85mm is still a hair better. And for less than 400 bucks, this lens is even more attractive. Just my opinion.

I just bought a used 24-105 on eBay. I have only taken a few shots but hope to get out tomorrow & give the lens a workout.my next purchase will be a new body to replace my 8 year old canon XTi. I have heard many many canon people say the 70-200 & I can see that in my future.
Good luck .......have fun

NegativeBLUR,

I read alot about the 85 before I got it. I never considered the 1.4 as it was out of my range, plus I was saving the big purchase for the FF 6D.

I love it and like it better as I get use to the Prime as pect of not have the benifit of the Zoom.

The web is full of absolutley glowing reviews of the 85 f1.4, so if money was not a concern, I would have gotten one. But it is like 5 times as much and I could not justify that as I don't make money with it.

I have read reviews from Photogs {pros} that say that and the 50 f1.2 are must haves! :hunf:

Elmosal,

Thanks for posting!

I also have a 70-200 and they come from the same gene pool so you will someday get one no doubt!
