i am a real beginner so what is a bridge camera ?
It's a "bridge" between compact P&S and DSLR. They have manual features that compacts don't have, but are standard to DSLR. Less portable than a pocket-cam, but smaller than a DSLR, with a fixed lens.
I Know that is confusing: how can a single lens reflex have multiple lenses? The answer is in history: There are twin lens reflexes, where you view through one lens and shoot through the other. In SIR you view and shoot through same lens.

I have looked at the Canon SX 40 and I do love Canon products. However, the SX40 doesn't shoot RAW. And my option of going to another manufacturer was simply cost related. If I can get apples to apples with the Canon Powershot G12 at a better price, I might consider that. I hate to have to count pennies, but there's nothing I can do about it.
Fuji currently makes a couple of bridge cameras that shoots RAW and JPEG. The Fuji FinePix HS30EXR/HS33EXR are the models. 16mb with 30x optical.

I am seriously thinking of getting a bridge camera. I would like a pretty long optical zoom, ability to shoot RAW and "surprise!" a reasonable price (under $500). Am I dreaming, or is there something out there that meets those requirements? I own a Canon T3 and a Kodak P&S. What do you think?
My son has a canon that didn't shoot raw , but he found a firmwear patch that allows raw. It is a third party "hacker"program that resides on your memory card . you loose a small bit of memory , but it allows saving to raw. I 'm looking for the same thing for Nikon, but it is not availale to my knowledge.

I bought my Fuigifilm Finepix HS30 EXR for $250 at Costco mid-December and have been firing away ever since. It has so many features to learn and the way for me is to use it. So far, I have no regrets and have filled the 8 gig that came with it and am on a 32 gig Sandisk. It has done well from indoor available light w/o flash on EXR auto to moon shots AE/Program and bracketed and numerous candid Grandson pics, all handheld. The IS is necessary at longer tele and works very well. It's hard to tell these from my tripod shots of the moon. I am finding limits on exr in bright sunlight with high contrast, but learning a new dance with this partner. I bought 3 extra Wasabi batteries with charger from Blue Nook through Amazon and with a click on special offers received free s&h code to use on checkout for $37; less than the price of one Fugi battery, and they're all China production. They are fully decoded Japanese cells and have a three year warranty. I have now run all through charge/run and recharge cycles and they work fine
