I took a few moments this morning to take a couple of snap shots of my turtles. I was cleaning out tanks today so the kids were out in the baby pool. Not the most appealing of back drops.
These are of my three newest rescues. All of them are Yellow-bellied sliders. Unfortunately these guys are sold in all most every pet shop and feed store around here. (NOT getting on my soap box about this! I could go on all day!!!)
While Coopers former owners kept him in more or less clean water, they didn't understand that they also needed to have a UV light for the guy. So without this his shell is somewhat deformed and I really don't think the poor guy has shed once in his life. He was also slightly underweight when I got him.
Amber and Jasper were dropped of at a local vets office in the most disgusting water! Their former owner had them in a bowl not much bigger than a Beta bowl and had not even ONCE changed the water. They dropped them off stating they were just too smelly to keep! (HELLO..... water changes and filters people!!!)
Cooper
Cooper....so handsome!
Amber....a light color morph of a yellow-bellie
Jasper
lucky turtles - backdrop looks fine - great clarity
If you stick them under a UV light, will this fix them up?

How wonderful, I guess this is a first for me. I've never seen or thought about photographing turtles. Amazing shots.

UV light is essential for the absorption of calcium. With out calcium shells and bones get brittle and or deformed. Since Cooper is still very young and now under a proper light source (as well as taken outside on a regular basis) he really should recover just fine. May still have some slight deformity of the shell but it should get less noticeable as he get older.

Very cool Shane! I didn't know folks could be that stupid. If you get a pet, you should know what to do to take care of it! Very nice shots. Well done!.
On a side note.:) Do you have any shots showing the turtle all the way around him at a lower level? I just might find him in a piece of wood. :) Never have done a turtle. :)

Thanks! Turtles are one of my favorite animals. I just can't say no when I here about a hard luck case. This may be why I have 7 of the buggers right now.

Thanks Erv! I just wish that more people looked at the world the way you do. I don't know who to be more mad at....the person who buys a critter on impulse who has no idea what they are getting into or, the person selling the turtle that tells well meaning people that all you have to do to take care of them properly is to keep them in a small bowl (because you know...they only grow to the size of their environment - banging my head here!) and throw some food at them 3-4 times a week!
As for the pics...tell me exactly what you need and I will be more than happy to get you some reference pics. My big boy Sweetpea (yea, I named him before I knew he was a he) is the perfect camera hog! He will be more than happy to model for you!

That would be cool. I need to see him like he was on a shelf, just a little lower than your eye. And a few shots around him. Then one from the top.:):) Maybe a total of 5 shots.:) You can use my email if you want.:)

I will see if he is in any of one pieces of wood.:)
