Monochromatic vs color on memory card

I have a Canon 7D and want to shoot Monochromatic can I use my same memory card that I currently have color pictures on or am I better off switching cards and having one for Monochromatic and one for Color? If I have Monochromatic and color on one card will this affect my down load into Lightroom 3.2?

Just put them all on the same card. If you shoot RAW those files are all the same anyway. The JPGs can be mixed without a problem unless you want to separate them into separate folders as you are importing to LR.

You can mix and match on the card and I don't think it woulld have any effect on LR download

Thanks for the info Wahawk and GDRoth I shoot in raw and jpeg so figured it wouldn't but I had this nagging feeling that I would screw up my downloads.

Shelley, I normally shoot color and change them to mono in processing. This way you have both color and mono from the same file. You can always remove the color but you can’t put it back. Most people I know do this.

Yes

No

No

But you are better off shooting all color and doing the mono conversion in Lightroom. It gives you more options.

Mtmn and boydimages,

I have been shooting color and then changing them to B&W but wanted to try shooting B&W from camera and see what the contrast difference is. Just trying to mix things up a little.

That memory card is nothing but a digital storage device. I use one to put MP3 music files on in my car. You can put any kind of file on it, and the product of your camera is nothing more than a digital file, whether it's B&W, color, raw or JPG.

Fun to experiment.

Do know though that your camera always records the data in color so even if you set it to shoot monochrome jpegs if you also save the RAW files with the shots they will carry the color information. The color information is discarded if you let the camera do the monochrome conversion and do not save the RAW files.

Shoot everything as colour RAW files then import into light room de saturate but keep the colour layers and adjust these till you get the effect you want. Or shoot JPEGS and import into Photoshop in adjust channel mixer click monochrome and then adjust the three sliders to get the effect you require. Regards BRIAN P

That is one simple way to make the monochrome but Lightroom offers other options that apparantly do a better job.

Somebody posted a link to a tutorial in a thread the other day. I couldn't find it right off but you probably can be searching for a recent thread on monochrome or something.
