The 150- 500 is a heavy lens, you would need a tripod to use it. I have one. The 150--500 cost $1065. The Sigma 50-500 is about 1645.
If your going to go with Sigma, do look at both of the lens. The 50-500 was released about 3 weeks after I got the 160-500.

I also believe Sigma has a rebate on some of their lens.
Check it out.

I, also own the 150-500 lens. I have had it for about a year now, and it is great, if you plan on using it outside and in areas that are well lit. As Traveler90712 said, it is a heavy lens and usually requires at least a monopod, however, I have used it hand-held at the zoo with some great results, as the OS and auto-focus systems work great. But after a couple hours at the zoo with this lens, you begin to know it's heavy. The lens is a f5-f6.3 lens, so in low light areas, it is a bit challenged. Over-all, for around $1065, I think it's a great deal. I have no experience with the other "Bigma", the 50-500mm, but have heard good things about it also. Since Sigma just came out with the new version of the 50-500mm lens, I would definitely check out both lens.
Good Luck with your purchase.

Buy it someplace you have the option to return (like b&h). I owned this lens and it was horrible. No matter what I did everything was soft...soft... soft! Possible I had a bad copy (I've heard of this). I spoke to people @ an eagle shoot with them, and they loved them. I got rid of it and got the 400mm "L" f5.6, and it blew the Sigma away. Owned other Sigmas and did not like them, won't buy another. This was my experience.

Here are some Eagle shots I took today with the 50-500mm Sigma, handheld with a Nikon D90. Mine is the F4-6.3 version without OS.
