What's a cable? Always reader, never delete from your card always format in camera once files are transferred. Deleting from card will eventually corrupt it. Do a search

From the content I'd guess most posters are not shooting professionally? A pro would automatically download from his card to some memory device via a card reader, then would save both the card and download until back at the studio. He(she)'d use a fresh, formatted card to continue capture if more photos needed to be taken. If someone was going on a trip, even if they relied on a cord or memory card they'd be wise to have a back up of each- you never know when something will fail- usually when you are miles from any supplier but in a area of many photographic opportunities. and yes, do all the formatting of the card in camera.

I too have always used a card reader but your reply got me to thinking...Is it possible for a camera to get a virus?

Only if you have an StD card ;)

I've used a card reader for years and haven't had any problems with the card, the reader, or the camera. Just be sure to format the card every time in the camera.

The card reader is a lot faster than the cables.

Thank you all for your advice and comments.
Seems to be equally divided, some use the cable and some a card reader

Card reader built into the computer for downloading. HDMI cable from camera to TV for viewing videos and photos on a big screen.

I've always done it with the USB cable and its pretty easy. I did just buy a card reader to see if that were easier. I tried it once and perhaps I did something wrong, but instead of the pictures opening in my processing software, they showed in the windows photo viewer, which doesn't have the color quality of the imaging software from Canon or Fastone.
I did read in one of the comments that when you use the cable that it downloads everything, which isn't always true. All the pictures will show in the download viewer, but you get to go through and check off the ones you want to download to the computer, thereby doing some deleting beforehand.
All in all, its a personal choice so do whichever method is most efficient for your uses. Good luck.

a memory card reader is very handy to keep in your camera bag so if you are taking photos for someone else you can dl to their computer and reformat the memory card in front of them so it shows them that you no longer have any of the aforementioned photos.

The Canon software has the option of downloading just new images.

I don't have Canon software, but any such software should let you download just the images you want, new or old.

Put the card right in the computer slot! Hey - if a card reader buys the farm - it is cheap to replace. But then again, I have never heard of any slot, reader or USB failing. I think there are some readers that are designed for high speed downloading - but again the download speed is entirely dependent on the card.

i dunno: Really, who cares!

Cheers,
Take 5

If you want to avoid the card reader/cable controversy, use film.

A cable was supplied with my camera a card reader was not so that tells me the makers of my camera recommend a cable.

Was a memory card supplied with your camera? Does that imply that the makers of your camera don't recommend using a memory card?
