Welcome, Paula: I'm not a canon shooter, but that sounds like a lot of camera for a novice................by "shooting people" do you mean "street photography" or snap shots in the back yard? By "nature" do you mean landscapes or wildlife? can you expand a bit so the canon shooters can chime in?

Keep in mind that the EFS lenses on your rebel xs will NOT work with the 5D MkII. Maybe consider the 7D.

May want to look at the Canon 60D, not full frame but great camera, and your lenses will work with it.

What does your Canon EOS Rebel not do that you need it to?

I have the Canon 5D Mark II and it is a wonderful camera. But I did not start out with it. As someone said, it is a lot of camera, but if you are planning on staying with photography for the long haul, in the end you will save money by getting it. If you buy a 7D or 60D you really should buy lenses that will work with a full frame, if you plan on going the full frame later.

As MT Shooter said, EFS lenses will not work on the 5D, so you will have to buy a new lens (lenses). I would also suggest you don't buy the kit lens, unless you are short of funds, and go with a better lens.

My suggestions are based on growth. If you are planning on eventually moving to a full frame, then make sure you buy lenses that will fit the full frame. If you buy a kit lens it will be fine right now, but you probably would want a better lens pretty quickly.

The 5D is a lot of camera, but you don't have to use all the features at once! :) You will grow into it. I love the 21 megapixesl because, many times I have had to shoot low light situations with no flash and I still get good photos. The low noise level at high ISO's on this camera is amazing.

As MT mentioned your present lenses will most likely not work on the 5D, unless they are EF or L lenses. No EF-S lenses will work on that camera body. A good option would be the 7D which is a semi-professional body. It is an amazing camera, haven't ran into anyone that has been disapointed with it yet. To get the best from the 7D will require L quality lenses but it will accept your present lenses saving you some money for now.

I don't recall the OP saying anywhere that she only had EF-S lenses.
As a matter of fact I don't recall her saying anything at all about her lenses.
So at this stage, until she says what she has, everyone is making assumptions that may or may not be correct.

I say that if you have made up your mind that you have reasons and the money to go to full frame then go ahead.
And a 5D2 is a very capable camera.

My wife started her hobby with a Canon Powershot, then advanced to t2i, and now has the 5D mkll. I am not finicky enough to know the difference, nor do I enjoy photography as much as her, but she knows the difference and is happy with the upgrade. She is happy, and that should be your concern as well. Plus I've gotten some really cool hand me downs.

If you want to go full frame you should consider the new Canon 6d great way to get started on full frame for plus the wireless and GPS feature is really nice

Get the new 6d, its full frame and has all the basic features, exceptional low light, smaller size than the 5d. You would never have to worry about upgrading.

How important is the video to you... The 6D is having huge Moire and Anti Aliasing issues in the Video. The MkIII was ranked way better.

May want to wait to see what Canon is going to do with this problem

This google search will produce a huge number of hits on the problem:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Moire+problems+video+canon+6D&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

The reports show good still image characteristics however, if video is of no concern to you.

Looks a bit like Nikon AND Canon are both having trouble breaking the $2000 Full Frame barrier.

One other consideration, again if you don't shoot or plan to shoot video. The 6D may be an excellent entre into a purely still image Full Frame Canon camera, after the price "rockets" down from $500 to 600 like all the special prices on all the "new" Nikon d600's just did. Risky???
