Just got a refurbished Nikon D7000. (from Adorama) First photos show 8,200+ shots taken before I got it. Is that normal?

Like when you buy a used car. Refurbished for WHAT? Bad battery usage, bad focus, bad ISO ?

Only way you know is if paperwork comes with it for what it was refurbished for.

CarFax - But I've never seen CamFax.

If it works, don't worry.

8200 shot= hardly used - I think 150,000 shutter clicks is the expected like.

?????????????????????????

Yes!

Its refurbished, USED, so it has been SERVICED

With a shutter life of 150,000 and I have just bought two new, 8000 is nothing

"Factory" refurbished is just that, refurbished at the original factory or service facility capable of the task because it was returned for an issue.
Simply "reburbished" can mean anything coming from non-reputable sources. Some dealers consider a sensor cleaning as being "refurbished".

MT is correct - that's the reality of ambiguous terms like "refurbished."

Also, anyone that has worked in retail could tell you that any product not in original packaging or open box or returned because the buyer didn't like it will be sold as refurb. I have worked with computers and printers that were never out of the box but the box was messed up and they sold a refurb.

Hi all, I would think factory "refurbished" would mean the camera was tested to find any and all problems, and once found the errant pc card would be replaced with a new one. Then, it would be fully tested to determine if any further problems exist. In some cases, only the original body would survive. Techs in factory service are not allowed to put much time into any repair, before the entire item is either fully overhauled, or destroyed.

That sure seems logical and one would think that would be standard practice but.. Joe says it ain't always so.

Many thanks!
To respond to everyone...
M D7000 came from Adorama. It was factory refurbished by Nikon w/8,200 clicks. There was no indication of why it was refurbished. I have a year guarantee. I'm ready and excited to move on. I think I will have a big learning curve. I promise to post my first set of worthy photos. Look for me in contests too. (should I be so lucky)
Everybody please have a safe and happy new year.

I don't know what normal is but I just got a "factory refurbished" through Cameta and the starting shutter count on it was zero. I thought that meant they reset the shutter count because I thought refurbishment required testing it would have made at least a few shutter counts.

The camera looks brand new and came in a Nikon box with "Refurbished" printed on the box.

Some have suggested that there can be a difference between refurbished and "factory refurbished".

There is a difference between the two. Factory refurbished means Nikon actually did the refurbishment. Just "refurbished" means that some other company did the refurbishment, not Nikon.

Any demo or open box product has to be sold as Refurbished, even if it has never been out of the box. If the box left the store and was returned the product can't be sold as new- even if unopened. This protects the consumer from possible tampering.
And no, the counter on a shutter is never set back- the only way it reads zero is if it is new or the shutter has been replaced.

I have been led to believe that the factory does not reset the shutter count. If a camera is returned for any reason, it cannot be resold as new, so it goes back to the manufacturer. It will be thoroughly checked and put in a factory box of of a different color (Nikon - gray), and it will be packed with all the items that would come with a new camera.

Refurbs generally have a 90 day warranty, but Adorama and others make that a year.

That may be a law, I don't know. But I do know that is not the common practice by many retailers.
If it looks new, works, and all the packaging is there, they can and do seal it back up and sell it as new.
That is just reality, illegal or or not.
