others tell me that AF is awful slow on the 55-300. Belive it or not my mind was a blank I could not rember Ken Rockwells name.
I have the 55-300 VR DX. It is a good lens and my Avatar picture was taken with it.
I have the 70-300 Nikkor, which Ken Rockwell recommends as a better alternative in the above link for his review. I love this lens and would suggest that you also check this one out.
For DX go for the 18 to 300; for FX the 28 to 300. Both are VR, modern design AF-S lenses that are great as a general purpose optic.
I had the 55-300mmVr with my D3100DX camera and found it to be a good lens. NOT great, but very good for the price. It was acceptably sharp even at the longer end. I now have the 70-300mmVR but it is used on a FF(D600) camera.

The 55-300 was the first lens that I bought after getting back into photography and I really like it. The auto focus is a bit slow, so if you're into action shots you may not like it as well. However, it is a sharp lens, and has plenty of reach. Overall, I'd say that you can't go wrong for the money.
